The Wylde chamber will safely digest both civilian .223 and military 5.56.

"The .223 Wylde hybrid chamber was designed by Bill Wylde of Greenup, Illinois, to exploit the accuracy advantages of the .223 Remington chambering without pressure problems or compromising the functional reliability of semi-auto weapons like the AR-15 family when using 5.56×45mm NATO military ammunition.[2] Coincidentally, it shoots the relatively long and heavy 80-grain (5.18 g) bullets commonly used in the Sport Rifle Competition very well and is one of the preferred chambers for that use. The Wylde chamber is used by a few rifle manufacturers who sell "National Match" configuration AR-15 rifles, barrels, and upper receivers."

The way Bill Wylde tells the story, is that the chamber was designed for single loading, long competition rounds.
It was dumb luck that the new chamber shot everything well.

Yes, is marked 5.56mm on the lower. Need to get up to speed on AR_speak.

No markings whatsoever on the barrel, just alot of stainless steel.

Thanks for the info & link D/D

That's right... If it's stamped .223 Wylde or 5.56x45 you are good shooting either. No stamp and I would be shooting NATO ammo from the hip...

Watch for signs....

So when you fire a NATO/ 5.56mm round in a .223 chambered rifle the reaction is a bit violent?

I can understand that as it's a hotter round with slightly different dimensions.

From my research the RRA I have is the .223 Wylde.

I don't know if you'd get a KABOOM, but you might see the classic over-pressure signs or possibly get a stuck case.
.223 chambers are usually found in bolt guns while most all modern ARs are chambered in 5.56 (some are .223 Wylde)
With the popularity of these cartridges, it is important to know that the chambers are not alike and the cartridges are not "the same thing".

In the AR community, probably the biggest problem with .223 is that some of it is very weak and will not cycle a weapon set up for full power 5.56
You can tune them to run crap import ammo, but you don't want to test a new rig with crap ammo. Use full power Lake City 5.56 and get it running with that.

You can and can't. I'm a .308 / 7.62 NATO guy. The cases are NOT the same. Pressures in a .308 Win hunting round are much higher than 7.62 NATO human round. Single action bolt rifles need to withstand much higher pressures (90K PSI compared to 50K PSI). You can shoot 7.62 in a bolt gun all day long, but it is not advised to shoot .308 Win in a semi-auto 7.62 NATO...unless you don't like your face.

Correct. Saiga fires both but because its marked .308 Winny. There are lots of marked .308 semi-autos out there that will fire 7.62.

Headspace...headspace...headspace.

Skyguy and I were just having the .223 / 5.56 vs. .308 / 7.62 discussion the other night. I'm a firm believer in energy on target and BIG holes. Yeah, you can't carry as many rounds....but you don't have to shoot as much either. One and done battle rifles are the way to go. There is a reason why our troops and special operators carry the SCAR-17 now.

5.56 is a great, cheaper weekend round, less recoil and more rounds for the weight....but I want chit dead right fuggin' now. But that's just me. I wouldn't turn down a nice 5.56.

its actually marked .308, 7.62x51... atleast mine were...

ive had a couple time issues firing x51 NATO rounds out of .308 SA's, sometimes they dont cycle, depending on origin of said shells, age, ect...

if its marked .308, run .308 out of it... running sh!t milsurp ammo out of .308 guns is like running Arco regular gas in your Lambo....

yeah it may work, but its not going to do what its capable of...

A 5.56 is just about perfect for fruit shooting. Ladies and youngins appreciate the lack of recoil. I'm a .308 / 7.62 guy because I want a round that I can hunt everything with, while interchanging rifles from semi to bolt. Big game and perps alike. In my humble opinion, its the best SHTF caliber out there due to the versatility. I'm currently eye-balling a Kel-Tec RFB for chits and giggles. Kel-Tec doesn't have the best quality rep, but the RFB is frickin' cool and the round works nicely in my Weatherby .308 bolt gun. Lake City brass all the way.

Edit and PS: Bullpups aren't for everyone, but I like that the RFB is only about 24" long head to toe with a 16" barrel. It does take some balls to shoot a .308 with your face over the receiver though. Ears are a must becuse the muzzle is only 12" away.
