I thought the August-September article about "tracing" N. Umpqua steelhead was one of the best I've ever read.
The ODFW puts steelhead (winter and summer, hatchery and native) up for adoption to the public and businesses for $150, as a way of getting around tight budget restraints like we have here. They capture the fish, slam a tracer into is maw, and release them to do their thing. It begins to answer (with REAL data) some of the questions of when and how far fish travel, how long they stay in the river, what percentage get caught, released, etc. The continuing study is proving that we don't really know squat about these critters, except they go out and come back in later. Pick it up!
Hey Obsessed,
I tried to e-mail you and it didn't go. I see you changed jobs. You know me, e-mail me, you and I are fishing the same river!

I just put in for two years on that mag. Its alot better than Fishing and hunting, but I hope it doesn't go their way. Lets not start that debate again. I haven't been able to get a copy for some time. Safeway,Freddy's,and Haggen are lacking copies, so I had to subscribe didn't hurt much at 35$. Here's the number to get hooked up (503)653-8108or 800-541-9498. They require a credit card. The mag comes 6 times a year. J.C.B

I thought the article was an interesting idea, but it didn't say a damn thing. I read it, and read it again but found nothing of value. It seemed like a great idea but in my opinion it said nothing!
Great idea but no substance, typical of Frank Amato.

Haven't read the article yet but I do like the idea of asking for that type of particular help from the the public. I tried introducing a similar idea when an employee with WDFW and the reply I got from higher ups is that nobody would help out financially. I tell you what...this self emplyoyed independent businessman would dip into my wallet for a worthwhile piece of research from WDFW. My money goes to RMEF and DU primarily. Do you guys agree or disagree? And would you open up your wallet to help out WDFW?? Jim PS...My dad called last night, he and mom got two nice Kings on the Willapa. Hope this post doesn't get deleted

I would open my wallet to WDFW in the name of good science, sound research and decisions that would be based on that good science and research.

Ouch...somebody doesn't like frank very much I would also throw some money in for some good research. I would throw money into native style hatcheries too, if they'd build them. In a local river basin the Umatilla's (I think it's them maybe the Nes.) are acclimating some adult salmon trying to get them to hang around and spawn in a river that had it's Chinook population wiped out about 100 years ago. That kind thing makes me all smiley.

That was an excellent article though on the whole the magazine has gone downhill in recent years, seems to be more fly fishing based than anything else now adays.
