My nephew works in a small town in over in Pacific County. He’s got a good job and enjoys the rural lifestyle. He has been telling me about how he and his workplace buddies like to go out into the woods and shoot their pistols and revolvers. He also says that most all of his buddies enjoy deer and elk hunting. His dad was never much of a hunter so he has never owned a center fire bolt action rifle before. He felt a little bit left out of the fun so he called and asked for my advice on what he should look at for his first deer rifle. I told him to just hold off a bit and I’ll sniff around and see if I cant't come up with some sort of a sweet deal for him. So here’s what I did. At the December gun show in Chehalis, I figured I could just walk in and buy a used Remington 700 short action rifle with a standard bolt face for like 350.00 dollars. WRONG. OK, so on to plan B. I have an old FFL buddy and he got me a brand new Remington 700 short action stainless steel receiver with the bolt and trigger assembly. No barrel, no stock, just the receiver, bolt, and trigger. Sweet deal. I was lucky enough to call in a few favors from days gone buy and got an old plastic Remington stock for free. It also came with the BDL floor plate assembly, magazine box, spring, and follower. The stock did not come with a recoil pad. Three separate gluing operations later, the recoil pad was attached. So I get the Shilen select match stainless barrel in record time and chamber it up in .308 Winchester. No need to start a guy out with some sort of hyper magnum rifle to hunt the woods of Pacific County. I told him that they kill those critters over there with bows and arrows. I still had to wait quite awhile on the bi-pod so it gave me time to crank out a new set of scope rings to attach the Leupold Vari-X II 4x12 scope to the rifle action. I also got him a carry case to cart his stuff around. Then I scored big time on some ammo components from an old tournament shooter I know. 200 rounds of Federal Match nickel plated .308 brass. A box of Sierra 168 gr. Match bullets and a box of 165 Hornady SST bullets will get this young man off and running. Throw in a flashlight and a flask of wild turkey, well right there you got yourself the toys for a fun afternoon in the woods. I can tell you that my first deer rifle was not this nice, but that was then and this is now. Cheers ... Marv

My first deer rifle, which I still have, is a 6.5mm Arisaka. My dad bought the rifle, stocked it, had the bolt re-done to accommodate a scope, added a thumb operate safety and scope. Really nice small, lightweight, easy to carry gun. I was never much good with it but he killed more than 20 deer and goats with it, all on the first shot.

Wish Marv was my Uncle!!! Great skills!!!
Mine was (still have it) Pre-64 Mdl 70, .308 FW. Got it from my great grandfather. Shot my 1st buck with it. Kid shot his 2nd buck with it in 2015, after he added a Zeiss 4.5x14 replacing the old K-4 Weaver. Nice gun for an 11yo!

Grandpa's Winchester 30-30. I've still got it of course. Only thing ever killed with it is the open garbage pit rats. But that was fun

First deer rifle was a .303 British Enfield purchased from a Skyway, WA gunsmith, one of the Morrison Bros. It was a straight off the rack surplus rifle with a peep sight on target at 200 or 600 meters.
First deer I took with it was a four point Okanogan mulie at 25 yards. Next year, I shot a two point mulie buck at 75 yards, That deer wasn't DOA and I didn't want to waste a bullet, so I finished it off with a metal butt plate smash to the skull. It was not a rifle you worried about scratching up; it had already been through a war or two.
A couple years later, I bought a scoped Marlin 30-30 and sold the .303 Enfield to a friend for $15, my original cost.
Bart, that rifle you built is fine looking!

94 30-30 did the first two deer for me. still have it. Both kids started with the same pre 64 model 70 243 . Daughter clammed it after she shot her first buck with it and the son was bought off with a stainless Tica 270'. The daughter has 3 243s a 270 and a couple shotguns. I don't know how many guns the boy has now he just keeps asking for a safe. I do know the kids are off to a much better start than the old man. Makes me proud

Excellent work, Marv!
My first deer gun is the gun I still have...a Marlin 30-30. It's killed a lot of animals in the last 35 years.
Fish on...

I had a model 600 in 6mm Remington. My grandfather gave me the choice over that and a pre-64 model 70 in .243. I chose the Remington because I like the vent rib, half bolt, barrel length and I thought the giant front blade made it look more balanced than the plain barrel of the M70. I was just a stupid kid.
To continue on that note, I sold the rifle for a ferry ticket to Alaska to work a hill net boat for a summer.
I still have the .243 though.

Really nice gift for your nephew.
The first year rifle ever use was a borrowed 1903 Springfield in full battle rattle. After that I moved up to an SKS, and Ruger M77 in .300 WM. Too many rifles to count, but I still have them all, at least the ones used for deer and elk.

Still have and still hunt with my first big game rifle. Remington 788 in 30-30 purchased out in the middle of nowhere, desert Arizona at Diamond Jims gunshop. Crazy old guy that lived alone in his single wide house/gunshop/rattlesnake exhibit

Nice work BB.
Did that Shilen barrel arrive with that pattern on the profiled blank?
My 1st deer/elk rifle was a 1954 Winchester 1894 in 32 Win special. Still have it, shoots better than I can hold anymore with those buckhorn sights.
Seriously, it's consistent @ 2 MOA, of the bench with 170 grain Hornaday's & IMR 3031

Great work, BB! But you already knew I was a big fan of yours! Keep it up Uncle Bart! But, to answer the question: My Grandpa's Remington Model 700 chambered in Rem 7mm Mag. Sat in my safe for a while and finally on a whim replaced the old wooden stock with a new McMillians composite stock, put one some Tally LP rings, a Loopy 6x42 with an M1 turret and had Jim Cloward do a trigger job on it. (blue tape has since been replaced with red - this is an older photo) Damn thing kicks like there's no tomorrow and is a beast of a gun to shoot. But, it does shoot well. It will remain in my collection for ever....even if I never do take it out on hunts any more.

Hello chrome/22
The Shilen blanks come just like any other. A matte finish. After chambering and crowning, I mount the finished barrel to what's called a barrel spinner. It's basically a long piece of square tubing that has an arm on each end with plastic centers mounted to a bearing.
Simply polish the barrel up, through the various stages of grit. Start with 200 grit, then 400, then 500 and finish with white 555 to get a bright mirror finish. Mask off the muzzle and the threaded barrel tenon with some electrical tape and then slide a long piece of plastic / poly mesh over the barrel and lightly glass bead blast it. Not everyone's cup of tea, but what the hell.

I might have to see Uncle Bart about hotrodding a .280 into a .280 Ackley or mebbe a 28 Nosler. There's a 1909 Argentine in .280 that I've been eye-ballin'. Hell, with a .280 Ackley I could come on here and wax poetic just like BigStick. Need to find a clown stock.

My grandfather built me a Rem 700 platform in a lefty version when I was 12 years old. 6mm Remington is the cartridge. I killed umpteen whitetail and muleys over the years with it, and just last season I shot my first Washington Blacktail.
She's never failed me, and I don't plan to leave it in the case any time soon. I turn 30 next week, so she's been mine for 18 years now.
The hope is that someday I will have a youngster of my own, or in my family who is an up and coming hunter who I will be able to pass the rifle on to. It would be hard to see it go, but hey, it was a gift to me anyway!

What a shame. Those that know 6mm Rem, seek it out regardless. Why settle for the homely girl when you can have the pretty girl ?

Do I remember? And how. A used Remington model 78 Sportsman in .30-06 was my payment for a summer spent making hay and milking cows as a young man in the mid-west.
I saved a few bones and put a crappy Simmons scope on it and kilt me quite a few whitetails with it before I moved west and got lost in a big city for a while.
After more than just a few years in the closet I pulled it out to see if it still shot straight. It did.
Turns out it's not only a deer rifle but a moose rifle and a sheep rifle as well.
If it ain't broke...

Couldn't agree with you more. Excellent ballistics and plenty of knock down. I will probably always have a spot for 6mm in my cabinet. Not to mention it's a pea shooter, never afraid to let one fly!

Mine was a cut down .45 cal pennsylvanha kit muzzleloader for a 10 year old. Never successful with it. First deer was a borrowed .35 marlin levergun. The rest were thompson center new englanders in either .50 or .54. Also bought a rem 700 30-06 in there that took a few.
Nothing really special or memorable. I do still own the .45 and .54.

Grew up hunting the thick swamps of southern NH. Dad bought me a Harrington and Richardson model 88 single shot 20 gauge when I completed hunters ed in 1976 - that little shotgun kicks like a mule but still have it. First rifle was a used 1971 Remington 788 in 308, still have it and it still shoots very true after several thousand rounds down the pipe. The stock was beat to crap when I bought it so I spent better than half a school year building a new one in wood shop. Try doing that today.

Model 70, Pre-64, .270, Weaver 4K scope....bought in S. Dakota, 1964. at an auction.....price was $117.00. Hunted lots while going to college, in the S. Dakota Black Hills....antelope, white tail, mule deer, and wild turkey
I hunted in Grays Harbor, 1969 and 70......youngest son used it for the Hunter Ed. class......Now it just sits in a closet.
No hunting for me since 1971.....got hung up on the fishing bit.....fish, fish, and more fishing.

My first--a borrowed (from the kid) Kimber Classic in 300WSM. First deer-1 pull of the trigger=dead deer, second deer-1 pull of the trigger=dead deer. I kinda like that gun!!
