Man's Head Found Inside Fish

Aug. 30, 2000 — A human head was found on Monday inside a 63-inch-long giant Morgan cod caught by fishermen off the Australian coast near the city of Townsville.
Workers at a seafood processing plant in north Queensland made the grisly discovery as they were cutting up the fish for market. The head was "wholly intact" inside the cod's stomach. Peter Monson, co-owner of the Fine Kettle o' Fish factory in Cairns, said that cod do not have sharp teeth and suck in their prey. He said, "It's not an everyday occurrence that you make a discovery like this. There was just total disbelief."

A point of clarification and a question. The Australians call groupers "cod" (there aren't any true cod Down Under). So we know that a grouper's mouth -- even a relatively small fellow in the 100 lb range -- can get a bowling ball/ human head/ whatever inside.

My question is what happened to the sailor between the time he allegedly fell off the deck of his commercial fishing boat and the time a day or two later when the grouper was gutted and his head found inside? I'm no expert on groupers (I was groper at college, but that's another field . . . ), but I don't think even the bigger specimens have big enough teeth to do any serious decapitation work. The fellow at the processing plant concurs.

So the picture I'm left with is that this guys "mates" do him in, cut him up and leave him for da fishes. Da fishes do their work, and due to some extraordinary bad luck (from the shipmates' perspectives) they catch the fish with the evidence in the gut. Jimmy Hoffa, indeed. Question: was the price paid for the "cod" inclusive of the weight of the head, or was an adjustment made afterwards? (Sorry!)
