Hatchery factory second. Slipped through QA while heading down the assembly line. SF

Those two with the bad jaws look like shakers. Injured by encounters with hooks while young. Saw quite a few in the UW hatchery pond.

I've caught four of these deformed planter bows out of the same lake over the years. Haven't encountered them anywhere else. SF

Stonefish. That is likely a genetic abnormality . I think I saw that in some hatchery ponds. Result of inbreeding.

Thanks.... I figured inbreeding or too many header encounters with concrete pond walls while chasing fish pellets. SF

Stam, No sure, but I doubt it..... In this lake though they are all hatchery clones. No natural reproduction. Evo, That damn thing looks like a anchovy on roids. SF

Interesting beast from SE AK this summer.
Twice as fast?
Saw that one on a fb feed as well, stam. Called around and found the angler and talked with him. Not 'shopped but not real either. Simply an iphone camera anomaly. Older fly angler... on Orygun coast. Really great guy though!

That split nose was probably from being "shaken" off a hook.

Not a deformity but definitely an interesting way to take a lure. The spoon went through the bone, not the soft tissue.

Not a deformity but definitely an interesting way to take a lure. The spoon went through the bone, not the soft tissue. Here's your mechanism.... Thru and through hookup, top to bottom of jaw.... with hook point fully exposed on outer jaw. Fish hits net, hook snags mesh as fish thrashes violently in the net... spoon is forcibly drug butt first thru the mandible along original hook tract... now a hook "slot"

Double jaw fish. Lower Columbia King this year... Angler said the upper jaw was immobile but the lower one was functional and where it took the hook. Thoughts, doc? Fellow has head in freezer. Best,

NOT a double jaw at all.
That black "lower jaw" is simply the fish's tongue... prolapsed thru the floor of the mouth thru an earlier injury. Most likely an unceremonious but violent de-hooking at the hands of an irritated troller having to get rid of another small non-retainable king.
You can see where the fleshy membrane between the bony mandible and the tongue was avulsed. Without a way to surgically anchor the apex back to its submental attachment, the tissue simply contracted to form a permanent defect in the floor of the oral cavity.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

Good insight, doc. Makes a ton of sense to me. Thanks, NOT a double jaw at all.
