I used to spend a good chunk of my summers fishing the waters off of Quadra Island. Protected salt water, flyrods and bucktails for surface coho was the best sportfishing I have ever experienced. Never did chase the big Tyee much, up there. But for 'who knows why' the fishing began to fall apart. Worse and worse each year. It finally became so poor and Canadian prices were so high, it was just plain cheaper to get skunked at home. I haven't been back for a decade, but I sure miss the scenery, salt, eagles, orca and fast fishing. Anyone had a good trip up that way within recent memory? I talk to the outfitters at the sportsman shows(oakbay marine group, etc.)but, frankly I don't trust their reports or predictions.(Learned through expensive experience.) I do however trust your reports. Whatdaya think???

Yeah, I went up twice last year once in the middle of june and once in late july!!! The fishing for chinook absolutely sucked. I think we boated 2 kings in 2 days but on the july trip I made my first trip to the Gold river. That river is georgeous and I hooked 11 wild summer steelhead the one afternoon, I don't know if the area I was fishing was open though!!! I hate campbell river though, we had just terrible success fishing those livies, EH!!!

Thanks stlhdr 1, Thats kkinda what it was like when I quit fishing there. The Coho used to be easy! Don't know what your live bait tactics were, But, I know we always had much better success with long light leaders(about 10ft. x 8lb)and a very small treble in the upper lip or dorsal...it helps them to swim!I have heard however, that Gold River/ Nootka Sound is still hotter than heck for big kings about mid August. Just need a good sized boat to make the long run out to the sound. Thanks again. Still wish there was a good report.
