First find a neck. Look for a large , clean neck. Horse clam necks are black and funky. Geoduck necks are clean and pretty.



Then get a young guy to begin digging.



Sometimes you have to show them how.



Maybe even get the women helping.



Then it's back into the sand a bit deeper.



But perseverance will pay big dividends.

I took the younger one to do all the work, but most of them crapped out on me. I had to show them how.

Not that I'd know, but I'm guessing that if a scuba diver had a cutt off low pressure hose on the end of spare scuba cylinder, pressed in the hole, that would probably do the trick.

I'd almost bet that the sand would boil up and "liquify", and you could easily just pull out the clam.

Of course, it's illegal, so I'm only guessing......not that I'd know.

Sure, and you can get all the steelhead you want with a gill net. But . . .

Or a well placed pipe bomb in a terminal hatchery staging area!

Parker - I "know someone" who tried the scuba tank blaster approach and it didn't work. I think you need a hydraulic device, not a pneumatic device.

They harvest the comercial beds with a water tube with the water pressure of a garden hose turned all the way up. Grab the neck and work the tube down to the clam, and they come right up.

I'd like to get a briggs and straton pump and try it. Have not seen in the regs where this would be against the rules..........

Well, I guess my friend had the engineering all wrong. We gave up on it after a few tries.

I've been planting them on my beach now for 3 years, so when they are ready I can just drag the garden hose down at low tide and blast them up with water like the pros do. The cost for geoduc seed is 50 cents each, takes 5 years til harvest, and there's no limit on your own tidelands. I'm getting around 90% survival after 3 years.

Be sure to give the tribes their 50%.

Anybody care to give me an idea of where I can go within an hour of Tacoma. I have been trying North beach but haven't been able to find any. Thanks.

A post hole digger works great for the ducks. Dig down shoulder deep, 2-3" from the neck on the water side.
