So a person who shall remain anonomous recently told me that 50lb test of what ever line you prefer, is the only line that should be used as your leader between your flasher and hoochie. Immediatley I asked why, he blurted the word action he seems to believe that this has a huge effect on the action of the hoochie. He says that the most productive action you can create from flasher and hoochie is with 50lb test leader.

My question is simply is this true is there any other beleivers out there ?

Yep.... 40, 50, or even 60#. Hell I've even used 80 and 100# . Commercial guys run anywhere from 80 to 150#

He was telling the truth. I've had leader up to 40# test get bit right off by Salmon..Right now I have a spool of Berkley 60#, works great.
Go big, Not only for the action it imparts on your bait, but for when the day comes when a really big fish hits your gear at warp speed, your leader will be able to handle it.

I was skeptical too until I actually watched my hoochie rigged with 25# essentially go straight ahead like a bullet even though I was using a 11" flasher on a leader of 28". Now I use 40# Maxima or 50# Seguar and the hoochie now has some action.

50lb, 60lb, it doesn't matter. Just like the ladies say, I don't care if it is 50 or 60, as long as it is good and stiff....

50# for me, too. There is better action passed from the flasher/dodger with the stiffer line.

I run my leaders a lot shorter. 16" to 18" behind the flasher/dodger. Lots more action on the hootchie/bucktail. My hook-up ratios went up when I shortened the leader. The fish has to decide if it wants to eat the target or not. With the longer leaders, I was getting hits and releases from the downrigger, but not sticking the fish.

I also run a single, usually 6/0 Siwash, hook. Much easier to release the fish when necessary.

Tie up a short leader and run it alongside the boat and compare the action you get compared to the longer leaders.

And here I thought I was the only one running my gear that short. People laugh when they see the length. Guess the proof is in the puddin. Havent gone past 30#, but had a few fish chew right through my leader last summer.

I'm not laughin'. I've seen the proof. Might not get them all, but the strike rate goes way way up.

Question? I've used the heavy leader & length's described above, but a couple weeks ago going out with a guy i've never fished with befor swears on running 60" leader lengths, thought he was crazy, we went 4 for 6 that day, after talking to other's fishing same gear same place as described above they said they couldn't buy a bite, any thoughts?

Were you using hoochies at that length Doug?

I'll run coho killers and spoons back 52-60", but hoochies are anywhere fom 20-36"

I would also think blackmouth behave differently then their summer/fall adult cousin's just coming in to the Sound.

My response was based on the summer/fall fishery for adult salmon.

I have no idea what a blackmouth likes or doesn't like. Could be that the water is colder, the fish are down deeper, and they don't like that much action?

I will lay down a bet and say that I can out fish anyone on this board for kings at Sekiu using 40# clear maxima, 60" leader behind a hotspot flasher. And no I'm not the guy mentioned above.
