Either that seal is really hungry and/or aggressive or it is suffering from domoic acid poisoning.

PS. Please don't feed the seals or clean your fish at the docks and toss the fish waste in to the water.

I saw that this morning. I am sure glad the girl is ok. That's why its a good idea for little kids to have a life jacket on even on the docks.



You would think this could go without saying but yeah, this isn't the best idea.

No cleaning fish at the dock? No tossing the guts in the water? Not likely to happen. You think anyone wants that crap in their dumpster?

Just seems like broad-brush solution for a very specific problem at one or two locations. Gut tossing is a God-given constitutional right of all fishermen everywhere. Down right un-american to ask otherwise. Socialist, Nazi, Communist! Punish the seals not the sea gulls.

Reminds me of the sea lion in Wesport grabbing a dog and fish out of people's hands a couple months back. I had my kids down there just prior to those incedents and that same bull was eyeing us as we walked the docks from ten or fifteen feet and I kept thinking my six year old would be an easy target. Talk about your worse nightmare.

No different than feeding any wildlife- it just isnt a good idea. Fear of man is a good thing and maybe a hazing program would be a good start.

That seal needs a .22 headache if rangers dont take care of it. Never heard of anything like that. I knew it was just a matter of time with the stories of seals jumping up and taking fish off cutting tables on the dock. I figured it would be a missed fish and bit finger though. No fish present to draw the seal makes you wonder what could be wrong with the seal.

TheImpact of Domoic Acid on Marine Mammals

Domoic Acid was first pinpointed as a problem in marine mammals in 1998, when many California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) died along the Central California coast. There were an exceptionally high number of DA cases in 2003.

DA binds to a glutamate receptor that help nerves cells control the flow of ions across their cell membranes. The receptor no longer works correctly and the uncontrolled flux of ions damages and eventually kills the nerve cell.

The toxin affects the parts of the brain known as the hippocampus and amygdale and causes rapid neurological deterioration. Affected sea lions exhibit head weaving and bobbing, bulging eyes, mucus from the mouth, disorientation and atax (“drunken”) movements. Seizures are also prevalent.

The neurological impacts make it difficult for the animals to stay afloat and breath in the water. In many cases, marine mammals that are affected by Domoic Acid will beach (haul out of the water) in effort to rest and survive. Seabirds are also affected by DA.

In severe cases, permanent brain damage and eventually death are likely to occur

i think domoic acid explains a lot of the posts on the dark side. or maybe that's just acid

I agree we need the seals to have some fear and respect for man. Tiem to start shootin or atleast we should have a paintball derby, most hits wins!

he was in canada, they don't like guns up there... about two years ago the was a bear attack at Renfrew, nobody had a gun, but two dudes saved some guys life, killing the bear with gaffhooks and a fillet knife, so I guess they don't always need guns...

I read about that. The bear swam out to the dock and climbed into the guys boat.

I'll be loaded with a gaff in one hand and a fillet knife in the other while walking on the dock's for now on.Good luck,

actually a pretty cool story, Two gaffhooks in the bears back while it was attacking the guy, another guy reached under and slit it's throat, bear bled to death in the guys boat, the guys who helped were fine the guy who attacked was chewed up bad though....
