Need to place about 20 rods, 30 reels and several backpacks of gear into long term storage. Gear and rods have seen both salt and river usage.
Plan is to wash everything and vacuum seal the gear. Rods washed and placed in PVC tubes. Reels have line removed and drags set to zero, wraped in cloth and packed away.

I am keeping my 1025 prepared for use and my downrigger rod with MR3 ready for the salt. Brain tumor removal, two strokes, and two fights with kidney stones all in the last three years have taken a toll. I need to turn my health around and then fish with a renewed vengence with son and grandson.

Anything special I should do to protect the gear for several years??? How long can I store spools of line in dark dry storage??

Not much to add. If you vacuum seal the gear you seal in or out any moisture as well. Often open air exposure will allow moisture to evaporate as gear cools and warms. Not sure about fishing gear, but there have been many discussions around firearms. I favor cool and dry fairly constant temp environmens with oil rag rub/gear lube beforehand.

May I suggest giving away the line and replacing it when you recover.

and sincere Very Best wishes and God Speed to you! Prayers en route.

I too wish you well in your recovery.

I tend to agree with Rick, give the line away and replace it when you need it.

I've never vacuum packed reels and the such before. But, I would be nervous about doing that, for fear of residual moisture being trapped. I personally would just keep the reels in a dry location. Maybe inside the house under the bed for safe keeping. smile

Pick up some dessicant to throw in the bags with your stuff, it will dehydrate the space.
