I'm going to build my wife a jigging rod this spring for summer kings in the PS salt. Looking for 9 footer or so, jiggling PW darts and such up to 3-4 oz, running braid and 15 or 20 lb mono shock leaders. Plying 60-150 fow for the most part. I like fast action for that application, and I'll spiral wrap her a casting setup which needs to be a tough blank since it'll get a good deal of boat abuse. Any rod/blank recommendations y'all like or have experience with?

Yeah I know, another which is the best rod thread but who da hell elsm I gonna axe? Thanks,

fb

9 foot is a long jig rod. Especially for your wife and especially if fishing 3 to 4 oz jigs. I fish my GL2 HSR1023 quite a bit with jigs in the salt and like it a lot. Plus, I've abused the crap out of it and it hasn't broken yet.

I also have a few "Back Bounding rods". The BBR 904c is an awesome choice for up to 4 ounces. I also own a burlier Loomis BBR rod that is next up in the line but don't like it nearly as much. Lami makes a couple similar rods to the 904 labeled as "back bouncers" or "Puget Jigger". They work better as true jigging rods with the downside being that, once you hook a fish, the shorter rod is at a disadvantage in keeping a barbless hook stuck.

If they could just design a 6'6" jigging rod that telescopes to 10 feet once you hook a fish, I'd be a more successful fisherman.

Good luck,
AP

Rainshadow SW967 Spiral, although not long like you stated, but 8' and is great for Lings as well.

IMHO too many guys go with rods that are too long. Many Canuckians go with soft 10 1/2 foot rods, which I think waste a lot of energy. Half of every lift is simply loading the rod. I really like a 9 footer with a a fast action.

+1 they're pretty goofy looking too. Faster action means less effort. Plus you don't want to look like a clown. I've seen guys sling'n darts who look like they're working a railroad handcar.

I use a fast action 9 1/2' for light jigs up to about 4 oz, and use shorter rods for heavier jigs. However, I rarely use use jigs heavier than 3 oz.

I think my jigs rods are 7'10".

My arm would fall off trying to run a 9'+ rod through a tide change.
