I was in Anchorage and Fairbanks earlier this week. The mining company has lots of ads on TV essentially saying "They said the pipeline would be an environmental disaster and it wasn't." They show pictures of caribou under the pipeline. Next we will see pictures of grayling spawning in the acid ponds by the mine.

My opinion it should not be built. My belief it will be built. big money trumps environment almost every time. Within months of the gulf spill many were beating the drums for more drilling in the gulf.

Perfectly good question there. Two things come to mind. The first is a recent read that global human population increase will end fairly soon and then tend downward. Second, meanwhile we need to be more selective about what parts of the earth are sacrificed and poisoned in order to extract strategic minerals, including metals. Sacrificing a portion of the world's greatest salmon fishery for the short term advantage of a few billion $$ worth is myopic economics and global planning at its worst.
