I was handed a Lew's lefty low pro recently. as I was doing the worm gear/pawl replacement I noticed something surprising. the clutch pawl on this reel is impressive! as a reel fixer guy I've had to replace the "clutch pawl" in many popular reels. the shimano's, trions, revos' all have a serious Achilles heel. the clutch pawl eventually goes to krap like $10 brake pads. all are GARBAGE!

this Lew's low pro seems to have the clutch pawl fixed.

I've noticed over the years that Lew's flies under the radar of reel manufactures. yet the few that have used these reels speak exceptionally high of them. the guy who handed me this reel was totally impressed with it's ability to cast a country mile and bring in everything he has got a hook into.

below is few pics of this clutch pawl. if ALL reel manufacturers used this design I think everybody would be super happy.

thought it was totally post worthy.

this was a seriously used reel. yet the clutch pawl shows zero wear.

hope this was useful.

Does the Daiwa LEXA share the same Achilles heel?

Looking for a new back-bouncing reel (constantly in and out of gear). Thought REVO Toro might be the one, but it was a total DOG for this very reason, even after replacing the pawl.

i'm amazed how manufactures can put out great reels with weak flaws. it's like they purposely design reels to fail.

I have never had to open a daiwa....EVER! if that means anything. daiwa could be the Hondas or suburus of reels.

Good to know.... there's a TON of them out there, so it's not for lack of exposure. If it was a problem, you'd be seeing them.

Now those REVO's .... J F C.... that's gotta be the number one repair issue with the dam things

I've had a Lexa for almost two years, sadly it's never been used, I've taken it with me on trips, but never put it into use. I'm not sure if the Revo's that we purchased would have perfomed as well though.

The BB2's released in 2012/2013 are the best low pro casting reels I've used in the past 20-30 years. No frills, great casting with great drag systems straight out of the box. Heavy use + no maintenance = zero issues whatsoever.

(Too bad Lew's already replaced them with newer, crappier renditions earlier this year.)

"no frills" seems to be the secret to successful reels. the problem is the manufactures are hell bent on featuring new updated useless garbage "frills".

I bought, used on one trip, and returned a Revo last year for bad clutch prawl.

I guess they build them that way to keep Fishing Reel Technicians in business. You wouldn't want them to be hanging around like the Maytag repair man, now would you?
