This is a sad day for all of us as long time fisheries advocate Jim Wilcox passed away. He was a tireless worker for the resource and he will be missed. For those who do not know Jim needed a chair but never and I mean never let it slow him down. My favorite was him deer hunting off logging landings. Out he would go by himself find a spot out comes the chair to find a spot to glass out from then came the day...............he got the chair hung up. His description of getting back to the truck ( dragging himself ) and the using the truck to pull the chair free was hysterical. Still hunted but made sure not to get stuck was his solution. Jim my friend you will be missed by many.

R.I.P....

Major problem with losing a long time fishing advocate, not seeing many younger people wanting to be placements.

Too many want to "take from the resource and not want to attend meetings to continue to fight for the sporting public".

I'm sending my condolences for Jim's family, friends, and supporters. Hopefully he is fishing the big river in heaven with all the other fishermen we've lost.

Well, this brings back some memories.

I knew Jim when I was a kid way before he dove into fish advocacy....even before he became disabled, as he was a co-worker of my dads. I remember when Jim got injured and showed up to dad's work doing wheelies in his wheel chair that he'd be fine. And he was, eventually finding his true calling in fish advocacy work.

He even accompanied me on my first ocean charter trip(at the coaxing of my dad, I'm sure) when I was a nervous-as-hell-about-getting-seasick teen. I did get seasick but Jim made sure I was laughing anyway.

I lost touch with him over the years but heard his name mentioned frequently in the trenches of the fish wars. I wouldn't have expected any less. He accomplished a lot.

R.I.P Jim

Jim was one of the primary forces behind an on-line journal about (primarily) salmon. Lots of provocative articles. The passion will be missed.

The comment about the old folks leaving and not being replaced is being echoed in the professional ranks. The American Fisheries Society's annual meeting in Portland had a session on Fisheries Ethics (ethics of bios) and that was followed by an as yet to be be released special issue of the magazine Fisheries with peer reviewed articles on the subject. One of the editors lamented that it was only "the old guys" who were raising these questions.

Maybe it takes time, experience, and maybe a bigger bank account, that finally frees one's speech. Sounds like Jim grew into the role; i"ll miss him.
