Neighbor told me about two friends who were digging razors on one of the recent dark and stormy nights. They would follow the runout, dig a clam or two, listen to the crashing surf, then run back to dry sand. A roque wave overtook them while they were retreating. One fellow was knocked off his feet, was underwater and was being pulled out to sea by the ebb. The other fellow was able to keep his feet, but the water went over the top of his waders. Both eventually made it out of the surf, but they were soaking wet, freezing cold, and without dry clothes to change into. They lost their lantern when the wave hit them, and had a difficult time locating their truck in the darkness.

The story sounded a lot like the incident last year, where two women were swept out to sea and drowned while night digging for clams. Fortunately, these upcoming openings should allow some daylight digging.

Melanie , a friend from Seattle, and I went out Saturday night. We knew it was marginal weather wise but winds were in the right direction and it was the only night our friend would be able to go. Digging was a little challenging but we all limited, even though we only used two guns. Waves coming in were a little rough, I could see where your friends had difficulty as the waves coming in and going out were a little high and fast, took careful observation (visual, not listening) and kept our footing by being aware of waves and setting feet to avoid being knocked down. Melanie was holding on to her clam gun while it was all the way down to help keep her footing rather then retreating up the beach as she had run out of time. She got a little wet but kept her feet.Glad your buddies were all right . Bob and Melanie
