I have no idea how old these are or where they came from, so many of you may have seen them before, I just noticed they are on an Ak fishing site as well ... but they just just made it into my INBOX, so I thought I'd pass them along your way as a reminder to keep them glasses on!!

OUCH!!!!

I once had my buddy's hook slap me on the eye when fishing.
Since that day, I ALWAYS wear my Maui Jims when fishing.

Yes I looked and somehow found it interesting. But now I keep thinking about it and nearly puking...

Right up my alley, guys. Seen my fair share, but lead weights hitting the eye are far more common.

His lens looks like it's toast, but the cornea looks to be very salvagable. Biggest "if" is how much damage to the retina. As trashed as that guy's eye looks, there's still a chance for visual recovery, but it will take a series of operations to get it done. I feel for him in a big way.

I had a 3 yr old patient who took a hook in the eyeball on a fishing dock as his dad went to swing for the forward cast. After a trip to my operating room and several weeks healing, the kid was back to 20/20! Amazing.... and damned lucky!

"but lead weights hitting the eye are far more common."

I wear em the whole time fishing anymore... Had a piece of 3/16" lead 1 inch long on 10# test that came back at me on the DB went through the seat and put a big old scar in the plastic underneath... If that were my eye, not sure I would have much depth perception right now

My buddy broke off a big King when we were fishing out of LaPush. The line snapped back and the hook found its way down into my glasses and lodged in my eye lid. The worst part was the banana weight flying around with the boat in the waves. Barbless hooks are good thing.

The ER at the Soldotna Hospital keeps a running tally of hook removals.

I have a friend with Adies Tonic Pupil. I'd prefer the hook, as it has a chance of repair.

Try taking a 3/0 treble hook wrapped in lead and having it stick into your lower eyelid after flying back at you from across the river, fishing summer runs in low clear water... Instant black eye to say the least...

And before I catch any $hit for what I just said, I'm only human and I've done some stupid things in my way younger past... I probably deserved the hook in the face for it though \:\)

Well, before we were married, my wife and I, and another buddy and his wife hiked into a small lake and were fishing for trout and bass. My wife put a 4" plastic grub through the eyelid of my friends wife's eye and pinned that eyelid open, up against the top of her eye socket, right at the eyebrow when the chick walked behind her I was sick looking. I tried to unhook it but kept almost puking in the process. We had to walk the trail out like that, and she looked pretty funny going to the ER with that grub hangin from her eye. Nasty.

In the years past we used to go up to the Lewis at night and drift glow balls for the silvers when it was open in the higher water. I remember one situation when the water was 6000 cfs and a 4 ounce cannon ball was needed to plunk/drift the glow balls through. This guy and his girl friend came down and were all drunked up and started fishing next to me and my buddy. Needless to say the girl was so drunk she kept stumbling around and running her yap about wanting to leave while the boyfriend kept fishing. Right as she walked up behind him the guy set the hook while his stuff was only 10 feet from shore and the 4 ounce lead drilled the girl right under the eye and knocked her out cold. I still remember the glare the dude gave me when I said "that's one way to shut her up"....

brewer always wears safety gargles on the river because of just sort of things. two years ago on the kalama i had a very near close call with a hook going threw my thumb below the thumbnail. then i had a hook bury past the barb on the same thumb but along side the thumbnail. i have never had to witness or remove a hook from myself or anyone. since the appearence made my brother and nephew gag. brewer had to push the hook threw my thumb on my own and extract it. then three hours later had another hook buried into my left middle finger knuckle!!! no lie. by this time brewer is a master at hook removel, i won't go into how it happened a 3rd time but brewer pulled out the needlenose pliers, pushed that hook through the skin, cut the barb and slid the 3'00 back out. slammed a IPA and was good to go! this was all in one days fishing.
