A "yarnie" is just a couple of pieces of yarn (contrasting colors) tied under an egg loop and trimmed, right? And then there is the old Glo Bug. When fishing for Steelies, especially in low clear water in "no bait/scent" zones, is one better than the other? Appreciate any info. NCD.

The nice thing about the yarnie is you can custum tie them.

Make them bigger or smaller, differnt colors etc.

In those conditions, I use trout beads. (I fly fish, mostly.) I find them way more effective than yarnies, or glo bugs or crystal glo bugs. They are also cheap.

I don't like their method of running the line through the bead twice, then knotting. The bead's sharp edge, around the hole, weakens the line. Instead, I've developed a way of snelling yarn to the leader, then stringing the bead like a corky. I snell the yarn a couple inches above the hook, so that it looks like FnP's flossing eggs he uses in AK.

steelhead, especially winter runs, aren't especially picky fish and i don't think any way of setting up yarn is better than any other.

i have caught some nice fish by just mixing some pink and white strands of yarn to about the size of a cluster of roe, i don't think a steelhead can really tell the difference until after i've already stuck 'em.

Globugs or these guys. Try them off a dropper under a jig.

2nd the trout beads. To hold them in place get weed wacker cord.

I've used beads for many years in a wide variety of configurations very sucessfully. There are places they just can't be beat.

Unless you enjoy tying, the plain yarn will work just as well in clear water conditions as the fancier tied options shown above.

I don't think anything less than a perfectly tied glo-bug would satisfy any self respecting fly fisherman. Even fishing a perfectly tied glo-bug is just one step away from joining the likes of most of you bait chuckers.

Now you gear slinging, bait tossing, flossers could probably fish yarn on a hook and still be able to look yourself in the mirror. Not so with us highly evolved folks. Hell, we won't even touch one of those bobber thingies. Give me a strike indicator or give me death!

Those "fancier tied options...above" take about 30 seconds to make and will out fish globugs in most situations. They are just a Jensen egg sandwiched between two beads. A feather is pushed thru the lower bead and the whole thing is held together by a drop of super glue. No tying or trimming. Simple, effective, and fast.

I tied some jigs like that once. Only thing was that I was to lazy to drive from Gold Bar to a tackle store to get the proper beads so I had to drill the center of the beads out that I already had to allow them to fit up the shaft of the hook. It worked fine but it was a pain. Now if I would have had the correct beads to start and made them like you did I would have been in the money.

Oh and don't get me wrong I used to love to tie anything I could that was fishing related and I still do. However a little 2 year old boy at my house doesn't like me to tie fishing gear, he likes Choo Choo Trains.

I only play urban elitist flyfisherman on the internet. I'm pretty much just a guy who likes to fish. PW and some pencil lead works just fine for me. Put it under a float for the softer water and hold on.

Are you offering eggs for this winter or do I have to beg?

The Willie found a few rocks on the Yakima today. Also found some willing trout. Not a bad day!

Too complicated. Just floss them all! I prefer the Kenai Flip. Works for all species in all conditions!
