I say while working in the yard I saw something I had not seen before. Out of nowhere a sturgeon just came vertical out of the water not jumping but straight up, sorta stood there and then crashed back into the river. While fishing I witnessed this once but this went on for about once a minute 7 or 8 times ( guessing ). In fact I think there was more than one but can't say for sure. And the size this guy ( or girl ) had to be close to 7 feet long. Anyone know why they do that? It is awesome to see to say the least ............thought maybe someone might know why they do that.

Go down to Bonneville dam on the Columbia around the first part of June. There will be sturgeon jumping everywhere. All sizes too. Sometimes they come up vertically, sometimes they breach like a whale. Who knows why?

It's because they don't have middle fingers.

I've seen them do it many times on the Columbia and a few on the Chehalis and Willapa rivers as well as a couple times in the ocean just outside the breakers at Long Beach. Some were well over 7' ....I've seen a few real JUMBOS that had to be in the 12'+ club do the emergency submarine surface manuever.... come 1/2 way out then just fall back slowly...like on Red October.
A biologist once told me that's how the adults let each other know they're ready to spawn....the louder the spash, the larger and desireable the mate.
How he knew this, I have no idea. Maybe his very overweight brother did a bellyflop in the river once and was attacked by swarming, horney sturgeon.

Like others have mentioned have seen jumping and rolling sturgeon in a lot of places (Columbia, Puget sound, Snohomish, Stillaguamish, Skagit, etc). I pretty sure that it has nothing to do with spawning . Sturgeon are spring/early summer spawners and in this area they only spawn in the Columbia and Fraser.
I think they are just "happy" fish and have noticed that generally having jumping/rolling fish in the area means good fishing.

I've heard that sturgeon will come up and take a gulp of air before feeding. The air that they have trapped in their body will keep them at a slight angle so that they can more easily root with their nose to stir up food.
Some sturgeon master told me this. He put me into 3 oversize while nobody else was hooking up so I guess I believe him.
