Fishing opens early on the Hoh River

Action: Opens Hoh and South Fork Hoh Rivers.

Effective dates: May 14 and May 15, 2011

Species affected: Salmon and gamefish.

Location: The Hoh River from the mouth to the Olympic National Park boundary below the mouth of the South Fork Hoh. The South Fork Hoh River from its mouth to Olympic National Park boundary.

Reasons for action: The spring chinook fishery operates on a Wednesday through Sunday schedule. The standard opening day of May 16, falls on a Monday this year. As a result of discussions with the Hoh Tribe the starting date was moved to Saturday, May 14 offering a full opening on the weekend for both salmon and gamefish. The remainder of the recreational fishery will proceed as listed in the 2011-12 Fishing in Washington fishing pamphlet.

Never been on the peninsula before, but will be doing a hiking trip May 15th around the Hoh. Any general recommendations on where I might get bank access to throw a salmon line in? Are the fish in the upper river (above 101) already by the opener, or do I need to be farther down stream?
