Has anyone had this combo? A friend is planning to buy a 20' Super Vee with a 115 pump. Is a 115 enough power?

Just for perspective, my 22 ft SuperVee was originally matched with a 200 hp 2-stroke pump.
Wouldn't have wanted anything less.

I have had two 20' super vee and both with 200hp jet which is 140 at the pump. So if it is a 115HP outboard your going to lose 30% which would drop you to 80hp at the pump. A 150hp before you subtract the pump loss is as small as I would go. Remember having enough power can and will keep you out of trouble on the water! As far as gas MPH burned bigger motors get you on a plane faster then you can back off the throttle, plus the motors will last longer not being at high revs all the time. Just my two cents...........

That was what I was thinking, but the dudes at three rivers are convincing him that 115 is plenty (sales guy fishes 4 guys all the time in his without problem, and on and on).

If he is dealing with Steve he is not a liar, He fishes four guys alot. That 115 may be rated for that at the pump and not like similar older models where you would deduct 30%. Should you add more horsepoawer well, you can never have enough.

The new 20' Super V Lights actually handle well with a 115 4 stroke Yami with pump...ask Sleeeeeeder about it...that is what he has...I've been in his boat, fished in his boat, ran his boat, side drifted with his boat...everything is great with 3 or 4 dudes...

How does a 20' supervee, loaded to the gunnels with Rotten Chums run with a 115? Abu, are you just back here to schitt on every thread? Not much has changed.

Go MORE........150+ would be the least on a 20' boat.....You can always back off....if the hp is to much.....I like "getting out of the hole, quickly"....and then back off the rpm's.....
Cheaper, to get a bigger motor, on a new boat, than to decide, after a few months......how well I know..........

I have a 115 Optimax on my 19' Supervee and wish I had more power. But I'm kind of a speed freak.

I run a 115 Yamaha 2-stroke on my 16' wooldridge and it is just enough power for that boat, I wouldn't want to go any smaller. I think a 150 would be the absolute min on a 20.
Our work skiff is an 18' Wooldridge alaskan with a Yam 150 and its about perfect.
