Major phase of Ohop Creek restoration reaches important milestone

A sign at the entrance to Kjelstad Road East near Eatonville is covered with the logos of more than a dozen agencies and companies. It’s a visual snapshot of the comprehensive partnership that’s made the Ohop Creek restoration possible.

The project is aimed at improving habitat for Puget Sound chinook salmon, which is listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act. The overall goal is to restore as many as 6 miles of the creek, at an estimated cost of $8 million-$10 million.

Ohop Creek is one of the three streams that ....

Now the Indians can just grab the salmon out of the creek. No need to net them.

Ohop Creek has so many areas on private land that are dam near totally blocked with woody debris. I will be surprised is adult fish can even make it up to spawn.

My brother owns a parcel up stream quite a bit, real close to Ohop Lake. The tribe has been monitoring a stretch on his property that they say has quite a few fish spawning on it. I don't know if the project is cost efficient, but it does sound like there are quite a few using the creek and that they are able to get up quite a ways.
One issue that may come up in the future is that the Nisqually Land Trust is the actual owner of most of the restoration land, and they allow no harvests of any kind on their land.
