When I lived in Hawaii, I heard stories about locals' homes where every flat surface was covered with roaches, but that was only under cover of darkness.

They need 5-6 ten pound salmon apiece each day to feed their lard-asses.

Could be good time to develop a commercial market for seal meat and blubber.

Take 50 a day out of that crowd and see how long the rest of 'em hang around.

Never happen, but it's a viable solution.

From what I have found in the literature about 5-8% of body weight per day and that would be what actually goes down their throats - not the gross weight of fish killed. Males can weigh up to 1,000 pounds. To come up with a SWAG call it 8% because they generally are "teenage" males and 700 pounds so roughly 56#/day down the throat. Again, a SWAG of 50% loss so make it 112# of fish caught and divide by an average fish weight of 20# and you get roughly 5 salmon per day during salmon availability. So, 6,500 sea lions may kill up to 32,500 salmon a day if salmon is their only prey.

Play with those numbers as you wish but no matter how you juggle the formula the end result will be a huge number of salmon.

Larry B -

Using your numbers it would take only a month or so for those sea lions to eat the equivalent of a million fish!

yikes.

Looks like lots of hatchery pellets to me. There would be a bit of satisfaction in feeding sea lions to hatchery salmon. http://www.fws.gov/news/Historic/NewsReleases/1961/19610620a.pdf

Or forget Wicked Tuna, how about Wicked Sea Lion.

https://news.vice.com/article/the-japanese-can-t-stop-eating-endangered-sea-mammals

Quote:
Recently, the Japanese have found more cute sea mammals to consume — sea lions and seals. Endangered sea lions and seals. Government sources estimate several hundred of them are eaten each year, though it's not clear if anyone is truly keeping track of how many are killed.

Sea lions and seals are being hunted and killed off the shores off Hokkaido, Japan and then showing up in souvenir stores and on websites like Rakuten, Amazon Japan, and Yahoo!. There, shoppers can find the animals swimming … in curry sauce.

First, we gave the sea lion a go. The meat was tender, with a texture similar to that of lamb. The saltiness of the meat was subtle and not completely overpowered by the strong spices in the curry. In a nutshell, it was pretty good.

Anyone know if tribal harvest of sea lions and seals is legal?
It seems if they can apply to harvest a whale then marine mammals should be fair game, especially if they are harming their fishing.
I'm not sure where tribal harvest would fall within the MMPA.

What size mesh is required for a sea lion? wink

Nuke? Naw.

Now, a single 2,000lb bomb dropped from one of our local F/18's or P-Towns's F/15's would suffice.

Even if it was, pretty sure no modern day tribal member wants to touch one of them stinky critters. I'm sure they don't taste good. Kinda like when the tribe killed the whale and realized it tasted like...whale. rofl Think they'd rather eat a cheeseburger. I would.

Better go back to plan A. Nuke 'em with conventional munitions.

Just one AC-130 fly over would probably do the trick.

http://tdn.com/news/local/study-seals-se...e1701442cc.html

from wdfw.wa.gov: "California sea lions feed on a variety of fish and shellfish, including salmon, steelhead, Pacific whiting, herring, mackerel, eulachon, lamprey, codfish, walleye Pollock, spiny dogfish and squid. In recent years, they have also been observed preying on Columbia River sturgeon. Studies of scat samples collected in coastal waters and the Columbia River estuary indicate that salmon comprise 10 to 30 percent of the animals’ diet. "

I wonder if they were attracted by the huge smelt run this year.
