Impressive animal! How big would that have gotten if it had lived long enough to spawn? It's pushing 50lbs now, and would have likely put on another 20lbs before the fall.

Depends on when it would have come back home to spawn. Might not have been this fall but could have been in a couple of years? Impossible to know now.

That's how whack and stack on the ocean works I guess.

I've never caught a King even remotely close to that big. However, I'd like to one day, so I am pre-paying it forward to when that day arrives by committing to releasing it now. I just couldn't do it. Smaller fish eat just as well. Let the egg barges and genetics head up river. It's a gauntlet to be certain, but the odds are just wee bit better than a permanent whack to the head. IMO - that's just me.

I have some great Old Harbor video shot from on top of the cabin of my buddies 30' whaler. Clear water, huge kings coming to net, halibut on salmon rods, halibut executions via 22 LR, a lot of blood, and plenty beach brown bears.
Good Times.

In today's world I would video and release as well.

The one thing I would love to do is figure out how and where to mooch those fish.
The whole down-rigger trolling all day thingy sucks.

Unfortunately the fish are so spotty trolling is what they do.
