https://thereelnews.com/buyback/ "Through PSSI, DFO will be buying salmon license for fair market value based on their value over recent years. Currently there are 2,109 licenses: 1,457 gillnet, 376 troll and 276 sein netters. PSSI may also impact the First Nation fishers."

There was some information missing that I'm very curious about...namely, what will the shape of the harvest reform look like?
In the past "buyback programs" were designed to reduce the amount of commercial fishers, but NOT reduce their catch; it was intended to make it more profitable for those who didn't sell out.
If it retired their harvest shares as well, then I'm all for it, or bought back all of them eliminating that sector's harvest, without re-allocating it to someone else, then I'm also all for it.
If it's just taking them from one commercial fisher's tote and putting them in another's, then I'd rather my tax dollars not pay for one cent of it.
Fish on...
Todd

I agree with Todd as well. Harvest reform is not just about re-aranging the commercial harvest.
IMHO This buyback should reduce the take of our wild fishes.

Buybacks are just that... a mechanism to reduce participants making the industry more financially viable in the short term for those remaining.
But without TRUE harvest reform, it's basically just throwing some of the Titanic's deck chairs overboard, and rearranging the rest.

Seems the buybacks have the potential to make things much worse.
1. By making it more financially profitable, those in the industry will be able to invest more in better technology and gear.
2, Fewer boats makes it easier to continue to fish in down years. With fewer boats on the river it could increase the ability to stay out longer and make a greater effort to find the run.
3. It is a lot easier to spend time and effort lobbying if you expect to make $50,000 then if you expect to make $5000.
4. If going out costs $100.00 and the best possible return is $500 for the day you are less likely to venture out then if the best possible return is $5000.

Most of what I have seen from BC has come for steelheaders. Their view, based on DFP actions, is that the First nations will get fish for subsistence and ceremonial (subsistence is huge up there) with little left for anybody else. Especially wit recs, who "play with their food".
general consensus of those who actually know steelhead up there is that they are pretty much gone and DFO has no intent of changing that trajectory.
