Planning a bug rod trip up to this lake in late September. Any tips on how to fish it when the days cool off ?

I haven't fished it for years, since they "fixed" the road making it easy for the crowds to show up...never really hit a good dry fly bite there, but I seem to remember soft hackle standards providing some good to excellent fishing...princes and pheasant tails.

Fish on...

I know next to nothing about Chopaka, but given its location, I imagine it has a fair number of hoppers around that time of year....

Hopefully you are bringing a boat or float tube. If you are willing to stay up late, I've had some AMAZING fishing in the dark. I'll usually come in and eat dinner at late dusk and then head back out once it is actually dark. Go to the other side of the lake and face the reeds so the headlamp you'll need isn't annoying everyone that is camping. Station yourself a comfortable casting distance from the reeds and throw 2 to 4 inch, unweighted, black leeches on a floating line. Cast to the weed line and strip them back. Half the time, you'll hear the fish explode on it before you ever feel the grab. I sure wish that place was closer to me...

I've done that @ another eastside lake & on a moonless nite to boot, its a trip. It sounds like big dogs playing in the water. Then your line stops & the reel starts screaming.......... eek2

I'll have a Watermaster to get around in & some big black leeches too.

The night fishing thing is a blast. Camped at Lenice. Cast out a big chernobyl ant. Wait. Twitch. Strip. Big splash. Set the hook. I think I stayed up all night fishing that time.

I'm with kaiserD on the night time fishing. Make sure to use a stiff leader as they aren't leader shy. You can also troll 15 or 20ft off the bank. no mistaking the strike.
