I am trying to figure out which reel to buy for a 9wt 14' Spey rod? Best buy for the money.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a specific price range you're looking for?

Yeah, somewhere between $150-$250. I don't need the best, but one that works well. I just bought the rod today, a Scott 15' 4-piece 9wt, for a great price.

Sounds like you got a pretty nice rod. A 15 foot 9 weight is definitely the best all-round rod for spey casting.

I'd check out Ross Reels, for the money, they are a fine reel and have life time guarantees. You'll need a pretty large spool, spey lines are long and beefy.

Consider getting a Rio Mid-Spey if you haven't already purchased a line. It has a long belly, which can help get you some distance. It also comes with a variety of heads so that you can fish different types of water.

Best of luck

Well within your price range, consider the Tioga reels made by Teton. For your Scott 9 wt, I would recommend the 12LA TIOGA- 4.25"/ 9.4oz. WF12-200yds 30lb. backing. Machined aluminum, sealed drag, $170.00 reel-extra spool-$80.00 (Cabela's-postage paid) The savings will help pay for the spey line. Rio's Midspey or Airflo's Delta Long (65' & 64' long heads. (Airflos have a 5-yr. no crack warranty) I had two of the Tiogas-I liked them. I moved up to the Ross Canyons, really nice but they are a bit pricey ($475.00 for the BG-7 reel-$191.00 extra spools) One nice feature of the Teton/Tioga line is that the standard and large arbor spools are interchangable, if you need more line capacity. You might consider gel-spun backing with that large arbor spool. Take your rod and fit the reel to it, balance is an important factor, in reference to fatigue, depending on your grip and casting style, especially with 15' rods.

Check out the Cortland Magnum 200. It's an excellent reel at a little over $100.00. 4.0" dia., plenty of room for backing, offset disc drag, 8.4 ounces.

Thanks for all of the info, I bought Reddington 13/14 AS Gold for $90.00 . It will carry plenty of backing, and balance pretty nicely. I also purchased a Rio Mid-Spey 9/10 line to go with it. I got the whole combo for under $500.00.
$250 Rod, $150 line, and $90.00 Reel.

Have a couple of the Red's 13/14, and they're one of the few reels that (short of dropping faaaar moooore than you wanted that will hold the new ' long belly lines.' You will not be disapointed.

If the 'seller' had more of those reels please e mail me at Frederick_Evans@keybank.com as I'd like to get at least three more.
