Went out and fished a little lake in the cascades today and had a great time in the rain. Beautiful native cuts up to 16 inches on little emergers and plenty of smaller fish. Had a nice hatch of calibaetis and small black caddis coming off most of the day. Lots of surface active and a great day.
I'll try to post some pics later.

there is nothing like a fish taking a dry. And it gets better as the sizes of the fish increase.
We started out today with soft hackles which can look like a variety of emerging bugs or other swap food. I hooked a couple on them, but once i saw the little caddis coming off and the swallows working the lake, i switched to a #16 or so Elk Hair Caddis(blk) and just cast to an area of rising fish. Sometimes it sat on the surface for a minute before a fish would hit, other times it was instantaneous. What also was good, was stripping it very slowly to make a little ripple around the fly and this initiated a few strikes as well.
I then switched to a parachute adams in about a 14 as i saw some large mayflies coming off. This worked well, but once i put on the merger the fishing really took off. stripping it like a bug trying to get away caused some great strikes.
not sure if you know this, but when you are looking at rising fish, splashy rises = caddis hatch.... graceful or slow rises = mayfly hatch.

Sounds great, and no I did not know thanks. Heck I thought that I would have to go east of the mountians to find a hatch. But then again I am not sure I would know what one looked like. Iam startint to tie my own and that is also great fun hav only tied as small as 16 so far. and a elkhair caddis, and caddis X emerger are two I learned to tie when I took a class for beginers at Kaufmans. Thanks again. Glenn

yeah a little black x-caddis would have been money yesterday.
try tying some gray CDC emergers or some soft hackles if you plan to fish the lakes on this side.

Glen, I would of thought with your eyesight, you would not be able to tie a fly. :p let alone see a fish rise? I'm suprised the wife isn't keeping you up to your eyeballs in honey do projects.
Sounds like you're injoying retirement.
I thought you were getting your house ready to sell?
Craig

Craig. Yep this retirement is great and will be better once the house sells. It sure is neat to be able to fish anytime heck I can sleep in an still find a place to fish with little or no pressure. How many decades till you retire? tight lines. yep my eyes are not real good, but i am fishing more than you. Glenn
