Last Friday I was eating at Cucina!Cucina! on Elliot Bay and noticed that Chandler's Crabhouse and Fresh (wild) Fish Market had a advertisement on their front door for "Wild Steelhead".... Just one more place to avoid

This makes me want to vomit. The fact that these vendors are willing to risk the bad publicity indicates to me that society still doesn't appreciate the ethics we--or at least most of us--hold dear. Question for anyone: it's illegal to sell wild trout, why not wild steelhead? I've thought about the problem we all have with commercial versus sportfishing interests with regard to steelhead and it seems to me that if we outlawed the sale of wild steelhead we could solve the problem. Of course this isn't likely, but the same concerns which led to the ban on wild trout could logically be applied toward steelhead, right??? Or wrong? Does anyone know anything more about this? And if anyone has any ideas how we can fight this gross sell-out, I'm in on it. For now, here's some contact info, I say we give these people an earful.

I agree that it's a shame to see such beautiful animals gutted and on ice, and not swimming free. I'm not surprised, though. Heck, I regularly see rockfish fillets at Safeway, yet there is talk of putting rockfish on the Endangered Species list. WTF? Just because rockfish are ugly doesn't mean they're not as valuable as steelhead.

I didn't realize that it was illegal to sell wild trout. I thought they still did this in the Great Lakes. Hawk?? I imagine laws get around this because steelhead are anadromous and considered another species of salmon. Some sales are curtailed, at least in this state because you need a permit to buy/sell. The bulk of the stuff goes to the mid-west; thats where the numbers are. If permit requirements were nation-wide, and given the alternatives, I think you would see wild steelhead sales dwindle everywhere.

The rockfish considered for ESA are Puget Sound copper, brown, and quillback rockfish. The fillets you see at Safeway are from coastal populations (Alaska to California depending upon the fishery). There hasn't been a significant commercial rockfish fishery in Puget Sound since the 1980s.
