Hi all! I was just curious about where the steelhead or salmon go when the river blows out of shape? Do they shoot up the river, or run back down to escape the silt, or just hang out until it recedes? Any info. would be helpful in my scheduling of where to start up fishing again when the water drops. Thanks

Typically they stay about right where they are in the river although they will typically (in my experience) lay in the softest water right near shore.

I think eddie is right. I think the fish take off upriver as it starts to lower and clear up some so that they can see better and not get mud through their gills as they swim on up.

When the rivers are blown look for small creek mouths that are still running clear. A lot of times these may be only present during a rain event and dry the rest of the year. Some of these aren't even able to be classed as creeks. You'll find steelies nosed right up into these to get out of the dirt. Try medium to large spin glos with bait essentially plunked in their faces and you'll be pleasantly surprised by fish on! Problem is that the fish is going to have all that riverflow to kick your butt.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

If you're out in the Skok valley they go across the highway, through the fields, and up the ditches.

If you're going to fish in water like this, fish at your feet.
