Just about Two hours ago while I was working a guy came to the Police Department to report that he found about 20 dead fish that appeared to be steelhead about a mile above the Bogachiel bridge on La Push road. He said it appeared that someone through a stick of Dynomite in the hole. My Sergeant and I called the WDFW Officer in our area and reported it to him. We then went to the area where the fish were reported to be dead, Where we met the WDFW Officer. When we got to the hole we could see dead fish everywhere we first thought they were steelhead. After closer observation I saw that they all had adipose fins and spots all over there sides. I also notticed they all appeared to be females. These fish were clearly rainbows but they were all between 6 and 12lbs way to big for resident rainbows. We colected about 10 of the fish to take to the hatchery so a biologist could try and identify them. We cut a couple open to find they had no eggs or sperm in them. We opened up one of thier stomachs to find it full of dog food.

Where did these fish come from? What exactly were they? How did they get in the Bogachiel? These are all questions I cant answer. I think they probally came from someones trout pond but I dont know.

Sounds pretty wacko to me. I would bet someone took them out of a pond and threw them in the river though. I don't know anywhere else you can get dogfood, pretty sure they don't find that in the ocean. haha

Dogfood works wonders for warmwater fish like bream, sunfish, and bluegills. You didn't hear it from me wink

I don't see why they wouldn't work on trout since trout are your resident bream in my opinion.

I know some of the locals have stocked ponds with some big trout in them that are fed dog food, perhaps a massive die-off and dumping?? Not a good idea as who knows for sure what killed them and perhaps a transfer to live fish in the river?? eek
