I've been in possession of my great-grandfathers photo album for the last few years, and every once in awhile I pull it out and marvel at pictures that go back to 1895 and include shots from WWI, going through the newly-opened Panama Canal, very early pictures of Lake Washington where it looks mostly-bordered by trees, and numerous pictures of trout and steelhead that he caught up in the Seattle area. Wonderful, every one of them.

One of my personal favorite pictures is the character-filled shot of "Cousin Connie" in the midst of his garden-filled backyard, holding by a fishing line a rather large frog. The small version of the image can be found here and the larger version here .

Hope you all enjoy the picture.

Cool pic Dave.

Reminds me of time spent snagging bullfrogs with my grandpa as a kid out of his canoe.

You use what is essentialy a mace, through past the frog, and yank. They have the freakiest high pitched scream, not a sound you ever want ot hear.

Dave:

Interesting photo. I wonder if you know the time and place it was taken? The reason I ask is because this is clearly a bullfrog (introduced in the NW). Bullfrogs are wiping out some of the native amphibians, and there is some uncertainty as to how long they have been in the northwest. This photo may indicate they have been here longer than we thought. Any info?

You are very correct on the identification of the bull frog. According to the caption below the photo, Uncle Connie caught this big bullfrog in Duwamish Slough (I would assume the Renton area). Time frame would be estimated in the early to mid-1950's. I'll see if I can get any more info on it.

It's great fun catching bull frogs on flies at night. You go out after dark with flashlights or headlamps, a 9-10ft cane pole with a length of mono and a big dry fly attached. When you spot a frogs eyes shining back at you, you reach out with you pole and dangle the fly close enough so the frog will get it! man they sure can fight on a light cane pole. We used to get'em in the irrigation ditches, in the late spring when I lived in Klamath Falls, OR.
