I would also recommend the yamaha. I bought a 2002 8hp high thrust I would have been VERY happy with it. Its about 3-4 months old and I would guess it has apx 280 hours on it. So far its been the best motor I have ever owned. Worth the extra couple bucks.

Since you guys are apparently made of money, can you throw some my way? laugh

I told the wife I wanted a kicker, and how much a "good" one costs, she nearly busted a gut laughing ... I wish. It was a bit more like maniacal shrieking.

I have an 8 horse Merc. that I bought barely used for $800.00 five years ago. I considered it a steal...and run the heck out of it! Being a one puller even when cold makes it nice to! laugh

If your boat has weight to power limitations keep your new motors added weight in mind. I was going to switch over to the 9.9 four but didn't see the benefit of adding 40 extra pounds.

FJ...out.

The money you would spend on a Yamaha is well worth it.

For what it's worth, I have a Honda 7.5 hp (4 stroke)that I have had for over 25 years. All I have ever done is change the oil and spark plugs occasionally. Starts first pull every time. Four strokes are nice as they are much more quite than a two stroke. In my 16 ft aluminum you can carry on a conversation with the guy in the front seat without hollering.(while trolling) Also, no mixing gas . Good Luck.

1st choice...Yamaha
2nd choice...Honda
3rd choice...Suzuki

If you can't afford one of these brands...save your money until you can. You won't be sorry you did. smile

I've run 'em all or been w/friends that have had a range of motors and horsepowers over the years.

If your looking for a good motor less than five years old........Yamaha, i.e, Yamies.

But, don't turn down a small hp honda either!

With all outboards it really depends on the make and model by year. Just ask an unbiased outboard mechanic who has worked 'em all! I had a Merc 4.5 1980 kicker that lasted 20 years on my moocher and a Merc 4.0 1969 that only lasted 4 years. On the other hand I had a Evinrude 4.0 circa '70 that's still running on my brother's moocher.

In summary, save your money, wait out the winter boat shoe specials and go w/a Yamie or Honda.

As for those motors that start w/the letter "S", just ask Spawnout what he thinks of 'em!

Tightlines Buddy!
