Anybody else own a Shimano Corsaire?

I bought mine two years ago and have never been happy with it...what a hunk o' junk. I've used other bait casters with no problem, but this thing is a rat's nest just waiting to happen on every cast. I don't care much for the drag either and the gears feel like they're already stripped as well.

I think I saw another post about someone having trouble with their Corsair.

I'm looking to get a new bait caster...any advice?

I have ran mine on my downrigger rods for almost two years without any problems. I could see it being a pain tring to cast with it. I really like the curado sf for river style fishing. There lighter also.

Funny you should mention it...I cleaned out the garage a couple days ago, and ran across the Corsair I'd bought for a friend, who on his first day using it lost a fish because it inexplicably freespooled. Dang thing never did work right...a dark spot on Shimano's otherwise spotless reputation, as far as I'm concerned. The archives are full of complaints about this reel. Chuck it and pick up a Curado!

Camofish,

I've "BEEN THERE DONE THAT", so here is what to do. Mail the Corsair back and tell them you really like it but can't find anyone to fix it. They will send you a new one no charge. Then use it as a "loaner" and do as fishkissr99 said and go buy a curado.

why not just take it to the place you got it and tell them its a POS and doesnt work, try to get them to use the money from the reel for store credit... buy a curado or calcutta

You can send the old silver corsairs in to shimano for exchange with new gold colored version.I did that about a year ago. I have never used the new one so I can't say if it is any better than the silver one. BTW, just ran across corados for $109.=$3.95 shipping at www.bighook.com

201 BSF for that amount Keta? I got the older style for 89.95 on an REI closeout sale. If thats for a BSF then its a good deal... if for the older model then it's a bit high in my book.

I picked up a new 201 BSF also for 129.95...shoot I hope I didn't pay too much. Either way the BSF is the one to get. wink

Keta is correct. I sent my silver corsair back to shimano about a year and a half ago, they sent me the updated gold one with an explanation about the silver one being defective. They told me to junk the silver one. I thought that was pretty cool, didnt expect that out of Shimano.

Now that you mention it...

I can't count on both hands how many fish I've lost 'cause this reel started freespooling for no apparent reason! mad

I don't have the original sales receipt...is that going to be a problem? How long did it take to get the new reel back?

Thanks,

Shimano knew they had a problem with this reel and actually did a recall on them about 18 months ago.

Send it back or even ask your dealer to handle it for you as I am pretty sure they can still get credit from Shimano for them.

I've got a couple of the Curado BSF's. Nice, but not nice enough for the serious drift fisherman. I use them as my "utility" reels. Nothing will compliment your Loomis IMX 1025 like a nice Shimano Chronarch MG!

Or, if you're cheap like me, and don't mind hucking corkies with a big old heavy rod, you can always downgrade to a lowly Loomis GL3 1143 and the plain old Chronarch.

The Loomis IMX 1025 with a Chronarch MG is high on my "Want" List! wink

I sent two in a couple years ago and they replaced them both. They know that the originals were total pieces of garbage. The new ones still aren't great but they are decent spares. Just call Shimano and tell them your problem and they will tell you where to send it. I dont remeber to turn around but it was pretty quick. Then buy wither ambassaduers or higher quality shimanos smile Here is the link to the website and also the phone # 877-577-0600 Shimano reels Link Good luck

I purchased a brand new Corsair 400 awhile ago only because I was offered a great deal on it. I don't have any use for it so if anyone wants to make me an offer send me a PM.

There is simply no beating an Ambassadeur C3. Maybe not as fancy as others, but ultra-reliable, durable, and relatively cheap. The pflueger medalist of casting reels.

I own 2 corsairs one of them is the old silver one which basically has been a peice of junk, now after using one of the newer gold series that a friend owns I went out and bought one and have liked it very well and have had no problems with it.

Now after reading this link I am going to contact shimano and see if I can get the old silver series replaced for after readinghere it sounds like they want to stand by ther name and reputation. (I certainly hope so)
