Thinking about a trip to Tofino in May for Kings and Butts. Any body have any words of advice or encouragement?

Bring Dramamine

I have fished Ucluelet that early. Weather is always a factor.

Buy your tobacco products and top off your gas tanks in the U.S.

Good luck. I was in Kyuquot last May and it was great.

I have been looking into the same trip in May or June. I want to get a shot at chinook on a fly rod. Wouldn't mind a few butts on gear either.

Go for it! I'd push till the end of the month or into June....we were up there over Memorial Day weekend in '01 and had a blast. There's a good launch in town or shoot me an email and I can put you in touch with a good guide that we fished with for the STS story.

We went up there the last weekend in may last year and limited on Kings to 22lbs. No halibut but we weren't really targeting. We are also going back this May for another go round. We fished with Weigh West charters and they were great to deal with. They also have moorage if you take your own boat. Weather was cool and the seas managable, but I could see how it could turn pretty quick!

Good luck

Ditto on the Dramamine. That's the only place I've ever gotten seasick.

Hey Jerry-

If you are open to others tagging along, I wouldn't mind pulling my boat up there. Let's talk...

I was up there late June/early July for about a week. I chose the date based upon minimal tide movements. With minimal tide flows the waters weren't as rough as normally encountered and the fishing was quite good for halibut, rockfish, chinook, and some days red hot for silvers. The hottest salmon times are july on and that is also the most crowded fishing time. Awesome place! It can be really rough and windy up there but was basically pretty calm when I was there. I'll probably trailer up there again late June. May is supposed to be one of the best halibut months.
