I keep reading things like that and wonder about how things have sure changed from when we kept 500,000 troops in Vietnam for years on end. Was it the draft that made the difference? Or is this the result of Rumsfeld's new small, light, and fast Army? Or some other?

Looks like we have the smallest Army since pre-WWII.

Aunty,

It sounds like you are making the assumption that those folks that sign up for military duty want war? Real wartime is the only time they will be able to practice their craft. Personally I would guess that if you asked soldiers fighting if they would rather have the war over vs practicing their craft further they would choose the prior, don't you think? Or am i missing what you are trying to say?

Because they believe in the conflict or because they want to practice their craft?
