There was a big earthquake in southern Mexico this morning...heard from a friend of mine whose wife and daughter are in Mexico City, they are ok this morning but a wall in their house collapsed.

Scary stuff.

Fish on...

We were in Managua last week. We left town the day before their big one and got back the day after their last big aftershock. Living right , I guess.

There has been a TON of tectonic activity over the last several weeks. Subscribe to "Dutchsinse" on Facebook for some great writeups.

With all the movement be prepared for our big one here in the PNW... these events are all interrelated. Not crying wolf, but with all the movements it makes a biq quake in our area more likely.

I read "Cascadia's Fault" about ten years ago. It was then updated after the Japan subduction zone quake so I, of course, had to re read it.

Don't read this book if you want to get a good nights sleep!

Think of the west coast as a crumpled piece of carpet. Since the 1700 event the Olympic mountains have risen 10 feet up and 8 feet over Puget Sound while Puget Sound has been pushed down ~8 feet. So when Cascadia rips the coast will drop 10 feet and PS will rise 8 feet frown . If it is a complete failure the shaking will last up to six minutes (or more) as the fault breaks from the north tip of Vancouver Island to Crescent City Ca.

I'm with Sky-Guy. Since 1966 there have been two subduction quakes in Ak, two off of Chile and one off of Japan so I can't see how the Cascadia zone isn't over due.

I get e-mail notifications whenever a Tsunami watch/warning is issued. Nice to have when you are out on the beach clamming wink . Of course email hooked up to phone so pretty handy IF you have cell phone reception when you are out on the Ocean.

There really has been an unusual amount of activity over the past month. Fortunately , there is no evidence that an earthquake somewhere else makes one more likely to happen on the JDF plate.

While not on a plate contact point, Yellowstone has also had an interesting past 6 months, including some major gas developments. Idaho also just had a major rash of quake activity. We're pretty much the only major quake area around the world that hasn't had much activity.

One type of quake we have here, and it is hard to detect, is a really huge release of energy over a very long time. Months, I think. Apparently, some of our local faults will have a month or so of movement that releases a lot of pent-up energy but doesn't really shake anything. As I recall, geologists were not sure if these actually relieved stress on the subduction zone (lessening the chance of the "big one") or were just another quake in nature's toolbox.
