Currently, 110,000 pounds of natural gas are hitting the atmosphere each hour from the leak, resulting in the relocation of 2,200 households, International Business Times (IBT) reports. An additional 2,600 households may need to be relocated to avoid long-term health risks.

The Environmental Defense Fund estimates the environmental toll of the leak is equivalent to the emissions of 7 million cars per day.

Some experts are calling the leak the worst environmental disaster in the U.S. since the BP oil spill.

Why not pass a law that outlaws such leaks, that should take care of it.

I keep reading up on the gas leak, and I am kind of amazed that virtually no one is covering it at all...apparently it is a gigantic mess...but I guess we shouldn't be too surprised when the oil/gas industry and all of their owned b!tches in Congress can keep it under cover as long as they want.

Fish on...

Are you saying that congress is keeping the news media from reporting the story?

I am saying that oil/gas dollars are keeping anyone from really talking about it at all.

This one is a lot easier than the BP spill because it's not washing up on the beach with a bunch of dead animals...it's colorless gas.

Nah, it is right near a pricy neighborhood. Article I saw said they didn't want to light it off as there was too much gas spread way too far.

On the topic of swept under the rug, when's the last time anyone heard an update on Fukushima? Seems some of this stuff is on a "need to know" basis.

Something happening at least.

Quote:
Regulators on Saturday approved a comprehensive abatement order that requires Southern California Gas Co. to take immediate steps to contain a massive natural gas leak in Porter Ranch, permanently shut down the damaged well, establish a leak detection system and conduct an independent health study.

Following a six-hour public meeting in Woodland Hills, the Hearing Board of the South Coast Air Quality Management District voted 4-1 to approve the order.

“As a result of this order, SoCalGas must take immediate steps to minimize air pollution and odors from its leaking well and stop the leak as quickly as possible,” said Barry Wallerstein, SCAQMD’s executive officer. “It also will require the utility to thoroughly inspect all other wells at its Aliso Canyon storage facility to help prevent another major leak in the future.”
