Even though the wife has been gone for months, I still see her dam name when Windows XP starts up, is there any way to change that ?

Ha, and you didn't think it would be a serious problem...

It could be a couple of different things. First, check the "computer name". Right-click "My Computer" > "Properties" > "Computer Name" tab > "Change".

Also, go the the "Start" button > "Control Panel" > "Users" to see if she is listed there.

I'm thinking she put her name in when she registered XP online ?

She also ysed her name as Main Identity with Charter for our online provider...

I will follow the first recommendations right now. Thanks.

Indeed her name was listed under user accounts as the computer administrator...fixed that one.

The computer name is just a few didits and numbers, so I think that was issued from the factory...

Hmm, after shutting down there is still a pop-up password box indicating her as user, even though changed in control panel...

Maybe if I hold the tower under water for a few minutes ?

"While it’s possible to change your username from the User Accounts Control Panel, you won’t change the name of the underlying account name, as this could cause problems in Windows. There is a slightly convoluted workaround and while it’s a little fiddly, is far quicker than reinstalling Windows from scratch.

The walk through reveals how to use a hidden dialog inside System Properties to copy one user profile’s settings and files to another profile. This reproduces the original profile’s Documents and Settings folder in its entirety in the target profile, effectively duplicating it. Don’t worry about program preferences, your desktop, Taskbar layout and so on - all of these details are held inside your personal Documents and Settings folder.

Once the process has completed, restart Windows. Log on as your new user profile, and then delete the original from the User Accounts Control Panel. If you were the sole user of your PC, you can remove the log-on prompt at bootup by click Start > Run, typing control userpasswords2 and pressing [Return]. Remove the tick from 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer’, type in your new username and click OK twice.

1] In the User Accounts Control Panel create a new administrator account. Then log off your current account and log on as the new user to set them up. Restart your PC in Safe mode, logging on as the master Administrator.

2] Click Start, right-click My Computer > Properties. Switch to the Advanced tab and click Settings under User Profiles. You’ll see a list of all profiles set up on your PC appear. Select your old user profile and click Copy to.

3] Click Browse when prompted and locate your new user profile folder on your hard drive (it’ll be inside C:\Documents and Settings). Click OK followed by Yes. Once done, click OK twice and restart your PC."

Thanks a million for explaining all that, I don't know if I should even try it though, way above my pay grade.

I got the house although I have more bills now than I'd like...

The funny thing is, the puter she took has my name...and she doesn't want to trade. Both of them are old plain jane Dell systems. I think this one is a 1999 Dimension XPS T600 whatever that means...I know she upgraded the video card and sound card, but I was shocked to flip through a catalog the other day and see $500 systems with 300 Gigs, I'm thinking this one has less than 1 Gig, and trolls along forums like this just fine.

As you can see women are like computer viruses. Once they get in it's tough to get rid of them.
