I think it was staged...

I would think that a mine would have opened up the side of the ship, not just dented it...I would also think that if you ran into something big enough to make a dent like that, that you would have found what you ran into...dud torpedo? Mine? Botched terrorist attack? Poor operation of letoff valves as oil was pumped from one side of the ship to the other (mechanical implosion)?

Who knows?

The fact that Iran says they think was a 'freak wave' is so ridiculous that it makes me wonder if they played a hand in it, but why would they attack a Japanese tanker? If we did it to start another fake war, I'd wager we'd have done a better job of it

Just a couple years in 2008 ago an old German mine from 1917 washed up in Australia. Those things never go away. The WWII and later ones had proximity fuses.

Guessing by the dent it was some Hajji that pushed the button a couple seconds too early.

Something that came up with the Bradwood Landing LNG terminal was that there's somekind of report floating around that these aholes would like to hit an LNG tanker. Much more fire and explosion than a tanker full of crude, a small nuc as some experts described it.
