i mess around from time to time and like to draw... this is what ive come up with today, its not near finnished...

i thought about giving it to the winner in the "Gettin Jiggy With It" thread... framed of course... and signed by yours truely...

Seriously, if you like to draw, yes, you should continue. Artistic expression is a good outlet usually, regardless of how good or bad you are at it. People might razz you about your drawing being pretty good for fourth grade and all, but a lot of folks, maybe most, can't draw a steelhead as good as yours. There's one way you can get better at drawing, work at it. Just like anything else in life. Just like I was thinking that by the time you make your 20,000 post, you might learn how to write a complete sentence that actually makes sense too. Work at it.

Agreed on artistic expression. I am terrible at art but do it a lot for fun and don't go to message boards to ask if I am any good at it. It is about the process not the product.

However, I have to point at that this is likely a traced or copied steelhead. That position of the fish has been used a lot. It isn't like this view hasn't been seen before.

You want to impress me rh, draw a steelhead in a position I haven't seen a thousand times. Learn how to actually draw a fish, not emulate someone else who is a gifted illustrator that could draw a steelhead in hundreds of ways. That is the hard part.

And when your gf is done with nursing school, please tell her to give me a call.

If you like to do it then you should absolutely continue. I agree with SG about artistic expression being an outlet and it’s also a tribute to something you are involved with. I disagree about emulating the work of others. It’s a great way to learn and is often a pedagogical strategy of art instructors to have students emulate the work of others. Tracing or copying is plagiarism but if you give credit where credit is due then it’s OK in my book if you’re not trying to profit from it.

As far as your work it’s OK. From the dorsal to mouth it’s pretty good. From dorsal to tail there are some issues. The hard part about drawing animals in motion poses is maintaining proportion. Your tail at the bend seems to add or loose proportion if you imagine straitening your fish out. Also your tail is confusing the area around the anal fin. At quick glance it appears to have two anal fins split just like the belly and pectoral fins. So it looks wrong or un-natural. You may be working from another picture but try to analyze the colors and shading in the area so you can make a crisp distinctive separation of the two fins in that area.

Also your fishing line should be straight or seemingly tight with a rod, reel, and the current. With it wiggly, it looks like a piece of snapped off gear bouncing down stream that the fish will ingest or drag around.

yo Beezy, yeah i didnt trace it, but i did look at a picture for a quick reference when i started, then let my mind do the rest... i mean who doesnt do that when they are drawing, painting, ect?

j7, the tail section i questioned myself too, the reason it looks like there is multiple fins back there is because i tried to add the top and bottom of the actual tail fin into the picture.... its not as easy as it seems as you know.... anyways its just a "sketch", not the Mona Lisa

ill do another one today maybe... i have a couple good ideas... anyways i gotta go buy some gear here pretty soon, so i wont be around to entertain you fine gentlemen for a couple hours likely...
