Hello, just thought I'd share one of my favorite Christmas stories. It has received some extra press this year, owing to it being the 100 year anniversary of the event.

Merry Christmas!

We used to say that wars would stop when men refused to fight, now war is such a technology deal that it just takes a guy to run the computer. The Christmas truce was quite an event.

Imagine being the first guy to stand up, fully exposed to the machine guns and snipers that cut down your buddies the day before.
Took some stones.

I've heard of the event but never knew what it entailed. That was great though, thank you. I love glimpses of history and appreciate the compassion and innocence of this one.

If this is a Christmas history thread then I offer this in return- I heard it on the radio between stops today. Winston Churchill came to visit FDR a couple weeks after Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve. Both the president and Churchill spoke to the American people and Churchill attended church the next day. Although he had never heard the song "O Little Town of Bethlehem" before, he was noted as singing "robustly." I can only laugh at the thought of any current leader acting as humbly on any holiday.

Along with the CDs of Christmas songs and carols, from traditional to one by the Bare Naked Ladies (which is pretty darn good) I've always played for nearly 25 years, one by John McCutchen called Winter Solstice that has a piece called "Christmas in the Trenches" that commemorates this event. It's a very touching piece of music. If it doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you're probably not human.

I heard a story about the song your talking about SG. John McCutchen was playing the song in a small cafe in Europe- not sure of location but after he sang it these men with tears in thier eyes came up to him and asked how did you know? McCutchen said he never read about the story that it just came to him.
