I have gone through the old posts of new rod suggestions and found a lot of Allstar bashing and other fun stuff to read, but now that i need a new rod and reel for salmon and can't spend more than $150 tops what would you reccomend?

The Rapala rods are selling in the $60 range at Outdoor Emporium.

Dave, wouldn't you be happier with a fly rod? I remember what you said when I went to the dark side... well, welcome to it.

I have got more flyrods than i know what to do with, and I just got a new RPLXi and SLT. this damn guide program is making me spend my $$$ to damn fast.

I am going to be using it for trolling and mooching. I would rather troll with a mooching rod than mooch with a trolling rod though. I was thinking a Fenwick FS85 maybe or something comparable or a little softer.

Bill- I have always fished gear in the salt, but i never leave home without my flyrod.(I have 3 in the truck right now) I never said I didnt fish gear, but it always fun to stir the pot. smile

I was just teasing, Dave... had to get it in and did.

When I was at Neah Bay we had silvers boiling on the surface. You can bet the next time I'm there I'll have one of my rods with me and some clousers. I see..... my 7 wt rod and some 9 wt lines.

I bought a Rapala for bobber and jig fishing this year. They'd be a nice combo rod. A bit long as I got the 10 1/2' model, but certainly capable of one for the downrigger.

I bought a Rapala 9' 12 - 25# as a backup rod for my wife (yeah right! laugh ) and I've caught a few kings with it. Great rod for the money. Berkeley Air IM7 is another good one.

Bill-
I had over 30 silvers chasing my fly 2 days ago. I had about 10 hits before I finally hooked one solid. Its a lot of fun to watch them take the fly.

Depends on what type of "mooching" you want to do, and/or trolling. The FS89C fenwicks are awesome. I only use the Made in USA (pre buyout) fens. Awesome rods and all I use for my mooching and plunking. The FS85 (I use the FS85C since I only use baitcasters) aren't bad. But a bit light, especially on heavy gear. Great once the fish is on, but really puts a bend on the rod, and REALLY sucks it down with a fish on. Was my first baitcasting rod in fact back in the mid 70's. Still have it (mostly for my plug rod nowadays). Can't go wrong with them. Not sure about the new one's though.

I was in boater's world today at 38 st exit just off I-5 in Tacoma and they had a 8'6'' medium ugly stick with a 321 Graphite Penn (left hand)
combo for $99. Great deal if you use the wrong hand, the reel sells for that much alone.

Reel with your left, pull on it with your right Herm... Sort of like tonight before you fell asleep.

Go to Lamiglass in Woodland, they have a factory outlet store that sells seconds and repaired rods( new sections) no warentee but good rods for little money. Hmm reels are another story I don't know of any place to find good deals there.
