Need a propane heater for my boat. I'd like one that is of the radiant type but that is not fastened directly onto a tank. I'd like the heater to stand on a stable base but have maybe a 5' hose to the propane tank. Every thing I have seen to date in stores are the type that are attached right to the tank. Appreciate any suggestions and store locations.

Look for the one they call the heater / cooker. It has a built in stand and can work both ways. If you can find a windproof model, pay the extra $$$ and get it

Good advice Bob! My cousin was just commenting, today, on how I should have a heater in my boat for winter fishing. I just played it off and called him a wimp.

buy a small tank and rig up a hose yourself with gas hose at nappa. The fittings you can get at sporting goods stores and nappa. I have a set up like the one you are talking about, works great.
I also use a propane tank hose and fitting to a propane cook top and coleman propane lights for elk camp. I wouldn't know what to do without it.

I've wondered about getting a portable heater for my boat - but I am worried about the fire/explossion hazard. The gas tank on my seaswirl is right under the flooring were I'd place the heater. So my question is, how dangerous are these propane heaters around enclosed gas tanks?

We have one of the cooker heaters mentioned.Bought an adapter at Bobs,in Longview.
It works great.Besides keeping us warm,its nice to have a hot meal or cup of coffee during the day.

Propane heaters are dangerous around gas tanks because they are a potential source of ignition. Any gas fumes and you're in big trouble. Same reason why you turn the bilge blower on for a while before starting any inboard or I/O. The other significant danger in boats is that propane sinks in air so if you have a leak it ends up in the bilge. Having said that...I run a heater just like Bob describes in my driftboat but be very careful if you put one in a power boat with enclosed bilge. I think you want to mount the propane tank above decks so you can smell a leak before it goes too long and of course keep the burner away from anywhere that could have gas fumes. I have seen this done on some of the high end salmon boats (Skagit or Osprey?) so it is possible to do safely. Hope this helps.

The Mr. Heater with the stand is great! I have mine connected to a 10# tank. French Dip Sandwiches has become a bit of a tradition. I can't believe I froze my cahones off for so many years before getting the heater a couple of years ago.

PS I have found a place in Fremont that I get propane at for $.40 per pound! Praxair

There used to be a heater available (similar to "Mr. Heater") that was only about 5 inches in diameter. Every so often I see one in someone's boat but I've never run across one for sale. Anybody know what happened to these or if they are still available?
The smaller size would be perfect for the driftboat.
