The cheapest and best way to clean copper flashers and lures is lemon juice. Just soak it in a small baking pan for 15 or 20 minutes then scrub with a sponge. It is the most amazing thing I've ever seen as far as cleaning fishing gear is concerned. It's also cheap and easy to get. My older brother saw Martha Stewart cleaning something on tv with it ~ I have no clue why he was watching martha stewart but thats not important any more because it actually works.

Seems to me someone before said to use coke-a-cola. Can't remember for sure.

Are you sure it was your older brother watching Martha? It's ok to admit you watch her. I especially liked the episode that she put the floral arrangement on the fish creel that matched perfectly with her neoprenes. I didn't actually see it, my "big brother" told me about it. :p

To keep from having to "deep clean" is by rinsing in fresh water and drying with a towel prior to putting your gear away in the tackle box. When you get home at the end of the day, spray WD-40 on them. This will keep your expensive gear in prime shape for years to come.

During the course of the day, wrap your gear with a wet rag. This will not allow the gear to dry and get spots on them.

If you absolutely have to clean the gear, NEV-R Dull is a good polisher...

If your gear is antique... leave it as is

The best cleaning agent you can use to clean tarnished metal of any kind is water softener and salt.

If you've ever seen the commercials for Tarn-x where they dip the tarnished silver in the solution and the tarnish disappears...Tarn-x is basically water softener and saline solution. Therfore making your own is a snap and super cheap.

Calgon will work but I suggest walking down the laundry aisle at the supermarket and getting the biggest, cheapest box of generic water softener in the store.

1 quart water

2 tablespoons salt

2 tablespoons water softener

I like to use warm water because it helps with dissolving more quickly...

Try this once and I swear you'll never clean your gear any other way. Once you get your items clean I suggest taking downriggin's advice and applying some sort of oily residue, 3 in 1 or WD is what i use, this will prevent the items from further tarnishing before your next trip to the river...
