Bankie fishing!!!

Started off at dawn at Hoodsport. Three hours later and multiple setup and nothing. So we left. Witness hog after hog from the fishers that had boats both trolling and I guess they were plunking or something. New to me. Looked like a jigging technique.

Stopped my the lower Puyallup on the way home and the Humpies are running wild. Landed about 10 between the wife and I in the short time we stopped. C&R all day if you wish.

Sorry it is a vague report but most boat fishers may want to check out hoodsport for some monster kings.

Sounds like you had a great day of fishing, GTaholic! My husband and I traveled to the Willapa Bay just to find the Kings - hooked into some finally (the biggest was a 30 lb.) smile We would like to not have to travel so far this next time - where on the Canal were the Kings being caught? Do you know what technique that was being used - trolling, mooching, jigging?
Thanks for any tips you can offer.

They were both trolling and jigging and it was right by the Hoodsport hatchery.

Hey I can testify to that! I've been hitting the Puyallup yesterday and today. Pinks are being picked up by almost everyone who tries.

Silvers are being caught in 'moderate' numbers, and the occasional king is seen (about 1-2 daily from what I've seen).

I landed a few pinks today, kept a silver. My bro, his first time salmon fishin, landed a humpy his FIRST cast.... jerk.

Barnettm ,Find any slower water or holes that would hold fish. Try down stream from the Carbon long walk but worth it. fishy

On Labor day I took a friend who never caught a salmon before to Hoodsport. He landed a 15.4lb native king for his first fish, and this dude was bright chrome with fresh lice, nice fighter too. My 12 yr old son landed a nice 8lb coho 1 minutes later. We were just north of the hatchery trolling downriggers between the hatchery and the next little village of houses. Caught them both in 60ft of water trolling a coyote spoon about 4' behing a green/glo 11" hotspot. They both hit the same 4" blue and silver spoon, never got a hit on the hootchies or the cop car spoon. Once the wind came up the bite turned off, so go in the morning. I will post a pic of the king later when I get it downloaded. Fish were jumping everywhere, and big ones too. Tons of boats, a few fish caught, we were pretty lucky to finally get the 2 month skunk off the boat!

Just that he was unclipped. That is the only way I know to judge them, but then again I know a lot of hatchery fish don't get clipped.

He had an adipose and war paint and a head dress of eagle feathers!! laugh

Seriously, he just wasn't clipped. How else can you tell?

I know for a fact that NONE of the Hoodsport fish and NONE of the George Adams fish are clipped. That's 30,000 unclipped hatchery chinook to south Hood Canal.

There are only about 1,500 wild chinook to the Skok. So, most likely you caught hatchery fish.

Kind of funny but the state used to pay a group of skokomish indian women to man the trailer.

Sometimes hatchery chinook will have a little chip in their nose that tells about the fish. But ony someone with the right scanner can find it, and then that person will cut the whole nose off. frown

you can launch on the little puyallup just abve the confluence, but there is a concrete slab that you need to put a chunk of carpet on. kind of a pain, but i see guys do it all the time.

spring of 2004 all hood canal hatchery chinook are going to be mass marked....last year was the first time hoodsport clipped and tagged some in a long time..george adams has done an index group for awhile... the norm dicks' bill passed this year is mandating mass marking though it didn't quite supply enough money .....the year after in '05 all coastal hatcheries will be 100% mass marked...the year that after all columbia hatcheries will be mass marked...a heck of a lot of fish to do...
60+ million or so i think in 3 months...it's gonna be tough to do...
