For salmon and steelies.
What kind of molds are you guys using?
What type of jigs?
What size jig?
What brand, type, and hook size?

I am thinking seriously to start jigging and browsing through the Do It catelog but can't decide.

Thanks

i like the do it molds. i use 1/16th --1/4 for steelies and 1/8th --1/2 on salmon. i would buy the mold with graduating cavites first and play with that then if you get into mass production buy the 8 cavity single size mold. just the round head molds. if ya can find em get the non barbed collar one it will save ya some work trimmin those off. i use eagle claw 630's for 1/16th #4 --1/8 #2-- 1/4 #1/0 --3/8 and 1/2 #3/0. hope this helps. Are all the diameters for the 630's the same wire? I want to get a do-it mold in 1/8th and 1/4 but the say to use the 735's which is a fine wire hook. Any help would be great.

Use the 630's. They even make a saltwater version that is tougher. I get mine through Cabelas. Sometimes a slight modification is needed such as drilling out the "eye" of the jig mold, or as Fishon has done, enlarging the shank section of the mold, to fit the hook style that you have chosen.

The 630's are less than $5 a 100 or just over $3 a 100 when you buy them in the 1,000 pack. I start at #2's and go up from there.

Thanks. I'll get my mold tomorrow. Get ready to knock some steel over the next 9 days!

I've been looking at some of the Gamakatsus and they seem very weak.
I know that they have a few selections of jig hooks, but I don't think I had the opportunity to test them all.

What is the toughest Gamakatsu hooks you guys like best?

How are these compared to the other brands?

Thanks

I bought some Gamis and won't again, for jigs. The extra price is not worth the lack of performance. Some folks swear by Owners, but the price is pretty steep compared to $.03 a piece for the 630s.

Then again, I shop with value in mind and usually use Vision and Mustads for my drift gear. They work as well as anything out there.

One thing when fishing jigs, be gentle fighting your fish. You don't want to bend one out, then again, I don't horse fish unless I want to lose it on purpose because I can't keep it (king), or I don't want to touch it (chum).

You can do as I did and buy 4 different brands and try them. I would suggest staying away from the Mustad jig hooks, no matter how cheap. They were the worst.
