Trying to start jig fishing. Picked up the pole, reel, line, floats, and now the stuff to tie up some jigs. What brand? Color? Size hook? size jig head 1/32? 1/16? 1/8?

I have set up to tie up some pink jigs for summer stealhead. Will use same with plastic pink worms for chum etc. Picked up some Beau-Mac jigs in different colors. Also found some jigs on Ebay from guy in Castle Rock. Hope to use them also.

Shaggy,

I've been using "First Cast" jigs all winter and am very impressed with them, they use an Owner hook (2/0) and I have not lost a fish due to bent or broken hooks yet, couldn't say that about previous brands of jigs I've used.

I've mainly been using 1/8 oz jigs and have had good results on all the popular colors but white with orange beads has been the best producer for me.

Head hunter and Osprey jigs ( I believe that Osprey change it's name to Over The Edge Tackle) gets bites for me when everyone else is getting skunked. Did very good with jigs on winter fish this year.

Head Hunter's are scarce. I bought up a bunch and still have plenty, but you have to look hard to find them. I believe that manufacturer is no longer making them or in business.

No scone pix parker \:\) Not yet anyhow!

Savin' my bacon in these low flows!

The aerojigs have produced well for a number of guides out here with the low water ... and Kevin's jigs are a nice option as well (see links above).

Lots of good jig options these days, with the water year we're having, now is the time to try some out ;\)

Yeah, the Queets should come in to shape quite nicely by Saturday. Should be a good day on the water.

You fishing on Sunday?

If so, don't worry, as the fish come in on the tide. Well, you'd better hope so because I plan on sore mouthing a few freshies on Saturday!

Actually, what I'd really like to do is catch a damn steelhead off of his dock on Friday when I get there. I've been trying now for dang near 10 years and still haven't caught diddley over squat off that dock of his.

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that. Hopefully, the downstream neighbor (and dog?) doesn't mind.

But, on the flipside, that would be cheating, as it's not on his dock.

I know the slot you are thinking of. That is almost always money.

I use these two colors a lot. If you had a pink and white one in there, you'd have your wintertime clors covered pretty well.

They're 1/8 oz bead-bodied Beau Macs. I fish them because they're cheap........in bulk less than a buck apiece. Obviously not the same quality as a Silent Approach jig, for instance, but they're good enough for most applications. I mean, who pays 3-4 bucks for a jig? I figure if you spend 3-4 bones on a jig, you're not going to toss it into places you should be tossing it.

You can tie your own for not much money if you have the tying equipment. Then you'll be really stoked to pop a fish on one. Just something about catching a fish on a home made doohickey.

I'm with Dan S. the Beau Mac jigs are excellent and were designed by a great guy, the late Paul Beaupre. That said the Aero jigs are super as are the First Cast jigs, and a lot of others. I think that as long as you have a strong hook, an appropriate size and appropriate color you are in business. I tend to favor jigs with beads and jigs with two distinctly different colors.
