Which agencies do you guys go for boat insurance?
I tried State Farms, All State, and MetLife but their rates are surprisingly high; but then again I really don't know the fair market rate on boat insurance.

Thanks

I have my insurance with Allstate. I get a discount for having taken the USCG Auxiliary Boating Safety and Skills class. The discount has paid for the cost of the class. Don't know how their price compares to others. Depends on the make, model, motor, gear that you have on board.

I get mine through Boat US. I found that you certainly get better prices from companies that specialize in marine insurance vs going to companies like you mentioned. In fact on my recent renewal I got quotes from several companies just to see what the market was. The auto type companies were 40 to 50% higher.

I to get mine from a company that specializes in boat insurance. Boat something but not boat usa. Do your home work get prices but also find out what the policy covers and ranges. DO you plan to fish say up in canada does it cover that . How many miles off shore.

USAA - the best rates I found. I'm not military either (my father was). I think that they have opened up their insurance offerings to the general public.

All in all boat insurance is one of the cheapest components of owning a boat.

Two of my friends that shopped around ended up with the company I use, State Farm. As mentioned, the 10% discount for the boater safety class certificate is a good deal all-around.

And it depends on the boat. Mine is 24' glass IO boat.

They like to hear "fishing boat".

But when they hear: 20' long, 300hp V8, jet pump ... they tend to wig out.

Progressive. They do lots of stuff no one else will touch - Drift Boats, dirt bikes etc. Low rates too.

Thanks.
How do you guys pick your coverage?
I was thinking of purchasing coverage less than the total value of my boat.
Besides the two extreme situations of sinking and theft, I think either the haul or the motor can be salvaged from most accidents.
What's your thought on this?

I'll always error a little higher than total boat value. I figure I'd like to replace like for like, and with depreciation, your less likely to actually be able to replace your boat in case the unfortunate does happen.
