Here are some for you, BIG files, but if you need to print, they should do so.

I'll post some info on each ... I've got some steelhead somewhere, but I'd have to do some more digging and I got chores I need to do:

Net & salmon and Sol Duc / Boagachiel Cofluence by Quillayute Tribe, October 02

More fish being picked same locale / day.

One left on other side of the river, same day.

Tote filling up, same day.

Sport closure underway at the same time this was happening.

More:

Protest later in the day regarding the closure / continued netting. Look back in 2002 archives for lots more pictures if you like.

Silver laying next to net at G&L Shake Bar on lowr HOh River in Nov. 2003.

Steelhead being purchased directly from net (supposed to go through broker) at Leyendecker County Park on Quillayute River in February 04.

Fall king slashed (I suppose to have birds get it easier) after being pulled from net just below us in October 03 on lower HOh River.

Same deal / day with a chum.

Abandoned net on the lower Hoh in fall 01.

Three wild steelhead in what appears to be a lost net at Anderson Farm on lower Hoh in March 03.

"Closed due to vulerability of the Salmon resources" eh! I suppose the ones they left for the birds represent our 50%?

Well this was a depressing thread, guess I'll just go back to work now. KRM

It breaks my heart to see pics like these, but I think everyone needs to see this. The salmon I can handle, wild steelhead is too much. What happens to tribal fishers that abandon or loose nets?

SLAMMINSALMON2:

I'd be interested to see your report when you're finished.

Let me paraphrase the emergency closure posters for you all:

ALL OF YOU LAW-ABIDING, TAX-PAYING SPORTSMEN GET TO TAKE A BACK SEAT TO THE TRIBES THIS YEAR SO THEY CAN NET A RUN OF WILD CHINOOK TO NEAR EXTINCTION!! YEAH, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, BUT IN WASHINGTON, WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE ISN'T ALWAYS GOOD FOR THE GANDER!! TRY LAKE WASHINGTON, THERE'S A GOOD RUN OF SOCKEYE, COHO, AND CHINOOK THAT GOES THROUGH THERE... OH WAIT, THE TRIBES SCREWED THAT UP TOO!! SORRY, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE THAT $275 10.5' BILL HERZOG SPECIAL NEXT YEAR!! NOW GO TAKE A HIKE!!

The Nooksack used to leave the nets in for days then hook the net up to the hitch, drag the rotting fish up over the gravel bar, dump it into the back of the pickup and sell it at the cannery. Yummy.

Ya'll ain't gonna want to hear this, but it fer yer own good. The average non-fishing adult will sympathize with sports fisherman when it comes to something specific like netting salmon out of a puddle (Quill '02). But the average non-fishing public will tune you out if it starts sounding like generalized indian bashing. It is important how you deliver your message. Keep it to the point. And really think about that point before you spout off, or you'll lose credibility with the public.

Lastly, whats the difference between dumping chum carcasses after harvesting the eggs, and dumping mink carcasses after skinning them?

One more thing. I have the same question as Mingo. What's up with the Goober with the branch? Was he really fishing with that?

They use the sticks to hit the water with when it is low and clear to spook the fish into the nets. I have never seen so much netting pressure this year on the Quilayute. There was 14 jet boats at one time drift netting the 3 mile stretch of river. Plus they get one set net a piece. Which can only be a certain distance across the river to let fish bye. But their drift nets can be as long as they want. So they stretch them from one side to the other which = wipe out. They were very rude in there fishing this year. Drifting their nets past bank fishermen and not fiving anyway to sport anglers. I had one guy come up above my boat put his net out and drift his net right through where I was fishing. I had a silver on and so did a customer. He took our fish and all the rest of the fish in his net. He had so many fish it almost sunk his boat and he had to pull over to the bar. So I went down there and just about pinched his little head off. Sorry but they dont own the river and either do I. But they need to change there fishing practices.
