So I used to knock the heck out of fish on Bud's for steelhead spinners back in the day and I finally found them again, I am wondering about the drop of those spinners to the holding spots of fish. It seems to me that the spinners don't drop deep enough or work too well, I was thinking about adding a couple split shot or even a small piece of pencil led to the setp up to get it down there, any advice would be appreciated.

Get the current copy of Salmon, Trout and Steelheader- there is a great article on back bouncing set-up's for springers, and the same might apply for the spinners you are using.

Get Jed Davis's book on spinner fishing. It's older now, but is the single best book on steelhead fishing I've ever read. Jed is/was the Spinner King and all spinner fishermen should read this book.
Also, regarding getting/staying down, you need to make your own with quality components like Mor Tac to get a spinner that sinks well and stays down. It's all in the shape, weight, and materials of the body and blade.

Ditto what Wild Chrome said.

I use the commercially available spinners for ripples and tailouts but if you need to get down deep you need to make your own.

Do not add weight above the spinner if your casting it! Not only will it mess up the action of the spinner but it does nothing to help get it deeper. It's the hydraulics against the blade that keeps the spinner shallow as much as the overall weight of the thing.

Never have a problem getting into the zone with my PenTacs! Thanks Jed, you're still the King! Read his book if you want the best info. on fishing spinners. Hundreds of salmon and steelhead have been taken using his methods.

Well, I'll go against the norm.......I use weight when fishing normal water flows for both steelhead and salmon.

Helps get the spinner down faster and does not seem to effect the "fish catching" ability.

I use 2.5 - 3 of leader, snap swivel on both ends of the leader, larger one on line end so I can change amount of weight.

Works for me!!!!!!
